The 2000 Games will begin on Aug. 10 with the opening ceremonies at Oshawa's Civic Field. All eight munici- palities in the region will provide venues for the events, which are expect- ed to attract up to 20,000 spectators and participants. Scugog Township will host all the water events, including rowing, canoe- ing, and waterskiing, as well as lawn- bowling, beach volleyball and cycling. Uxbridge will host lawnbowling, cycling, and beach volleyball, and will also be the venue for ladies' soccer. Brock Township will play host to ladies' rugby, mens' softball, and cycling. Other events will be held in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Clarington, and Oshawa. The budget for the Games will be approximately $940,000, with about $400,000 of those funds coming from the Ontario government. Other funding will come from munic- ipal grants, opening ceremonies ticket sales, athlete registrations, souvenirs, 'Ontario ughout the yi wh share of $a0L 000. in and corporate fundraising. "We want to showcase each munici- pality and the region as a whole during the games," said event co-chair Tom Flood. "These will be the most successful games since the City of Oshawa first held them in 1973. We want the athletes to return to their home communities with nothing less than great memories." During her presentation of a $445,000 cheque from the province to the Games committee, Helen Johns, the Minister of Citizenship, Culture, and Recreation, noted "this will be a major tourism opportunity for this region and for major partnerships between the eight host towns and cities. I see great days ahead for the Region of Durham."
