"A Family Tradition for 134 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 7, 1999 - 9 A Port Perry man was arrested early yesterday morning after a brief police chase. Durham Police report that two officers were dis- patched in a marked cruiser to an area around Queen St. and Old Simcoe Rd. to search for a suspi- cious-looking person shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 6. While in the area, the officers noticed a green Ford Tempo drive by, heading west on Alma St. The officers decided to question the driver and fol- lights. At that point, the driver of the Tempo accelerated and the officers followed, police say. They drove more than four kilometres through res- idential sections of town. Police say the driver of the Tempo ran through five stop signs and a red light at the intersection of Hwy. 7A and Queen St. lowed the vehicle, activating their cruiser's roof Port man arrested after police chase The driver then turned on to Scugog Line 6, where he was pursued by two cruisers. The officers attempt- ed to block the driver in, and on one attempt the dri- ver swerved to block a cruiser and made contact with the left rear corner of the pursuit car. The officers finally managed to stop the car, and, after a brief struggle, managed to remove the man from his car. He was arrested, searched, and taken to the Port Perry station. As a result, a 20-year-old Port Perry man has been charged with one count of dangerous driving as well as two Highway Traffic Act offenses, including failing to stop for police and driving while suspended. He was also charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance after a vial of hash oil was found during a search. Historical Society prepares for Victorian carol service With the Christmas season upon us, the Lake Scugog Historical Society 1s preparing for their annual Victorian Christmas Carol Service. The popular event takes place at the Head Church, located on the Museum Grounds on Scugog Island, Sunday December 12, starting at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the evening, which will fea- ture the children's Christmas stories, carol singing, readings and a sing-a-long by request. The evening promises to bring back memories of Christmas past, and the program is followed with refreshments and "good- ies." 'Jubilee Christmas' at Pavilion Santa and the Jubilee Choir at the Whitby Seniors' Activity Centre are tuning up to wel- come you to a "Jubilee Christmas" at the Heyenshore Pavilion on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 3 Light refreshments will be provided as part of the $7 ticket price.
