14 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 7, 1999 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" By Rik Davie Special to the Star One of the teenagers charged in con- nection with violent confrontations at Port Perry and Uxbridge High Schools is now being taught at home, after allega- tions his life has been threatened. The parents of the 15-year-old (who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of their son) said that the boy was pulled from school after the most recent incident, in which it is alleged that an adult confronted the youth and a friend and threatened to kill the boy. Police sources will only say that the alleged threats are connected in some way to three recent incidents in which youths at Port Perry High School were involved in swarming type violence. In the most recent, it is alleged that several youths wearing ski masks attacked a former Port Perry student. Adult is charged with uttering threats That youth now attends Uxbridge High School as part of his conditions for release on charges laid after an earlier alleged attack. The parents of the 15-year-old who was allegedly threatened said that they had no other choice but to pull the boy from school. "Our doctor gave us a note saying that (his) nerves are shot, and he refuses to go back," said the father. "I mean, it's get- ting out of hand. We have adults threat- ening to kill these kids now; what's next?" The youth will now have a teacher come to his home for between three and four hours a week to help the student save some of his credits. Mark Jefferies, principal at Port Perry High School, said that the home schooling idea is not uncommon. "Students under the age of 16 have an obligation to attend school, and we have an obligation to educate them in the best way possible," said Mr. Jefferies. The principal said that arrangements for the schooling at home would have been made through Uxbridge. That's where the youth has attended classes since his release order in September has kept him from being on the property of Port Perry High School. "A doctor has said he cannot attend classes. And just as we would for any stu- dent who is sick or injured in some way that keeps them from attending classes, arrangements of some kind are made to see that his education continues as best it can," said Mr. Jefferies. But the parents of the youth are still upset about the possible loss of a school year. "When this goes to court, if the charges against him are dropped, what Board provides home classes for assault suspect does he get, an apology and a year of school lost?" said the man. "There just has to be a better way to handle this." Since the violent incidents began around Sept. 22, Durham Regional Police street crime officers have been investigating here. So far at least eight persons, including seven young offend- ers, have been charged with various offenses, and police are still seeking the public's help in locating suspects in a Nov. 16 swarming incident in Port Perry. Det. Paul Mooy said that a 31-year- old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the threats to the 15- year-old Port Perry youth and his com- panion. The threats were allegedly made Nov. 18. Police are asking anyone with knowl- edge of these incidents to contact them at 579-1520, ext. 2672 or Crime Stoppers at 436-TIPS (8477).
