8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 7, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" RR By Chris Hall Port Perry Star "A pilot project involving the local Big Brothers-Big Sisters organization and two local elementary schools aims to foster new friendships and increase the self-esteem of the children involved. Scheduled to begin early in the new year, the mentoring program -- a joint venture of the Big Brothers-Big Sisters of North Durham and the Durham District School Board -- is similar to the well-known Big Brothers method of matching children with adults. But partners in this program will get together at school, during class time, sald program co-ordinator Sharon Murdoch. "The program is similar to the Big Brothers-Big Sisters method now, but this is done to try and bring about new In-school program a new effort for agency friendships for the children and to increase their self-esteem," she said. Volunteers, known as mentors, meet with their young partners for an hour a week throughout the school year, dur- ing regular class time. Volunteers are asked to commit one year to the pro- gram. "This is not for academics, it is strictly time for having fun together. They can play sports, do arts and crafts, play games, spend time on the computer, read... anything that inter- ests them," said Mrs. Murdoch. "There is every effort made to match the child with someone who shares their same interests, someone with the same per- sonality." The mentoring program has been proven successful across the nation over the past several years. The North Durham organization thought it would Big Brothers seek support for mentor be a good idea to give it a try here, said Mrs. Murdoch. S.A. Cawker and R.H. Cornish pub- lic schools will participate in the pro- gram. It is up to each school to identify students who may be in need of a friend, said Mrs. Murdoch. "We look for children who may just need someone to talk to, or have had a loss in their family due to death or sep- aration or divorce. Some of them may have stress and they need to talk about it with a special friend," she said. "We want to give the children some support, help them hopefully increase their self-esteem like if they're new to the area." To ensure that the program lasts beyond the next year, more volunteers will be needed to make it a success. "We're off to a slow start now, but we do have some matches," said Mrs. program Murdoch. There are four children cur- rently waiting for volunteers, and there could "easily" be up to 30 in the new year, she said. So the organization is making an appeal to the community in an attempt to make the program work here. "We desperately' need the help of corporations and businesses," said Mrs. Murdoch. "We rely on volunteers and we need the employer's support, we need them to be flexible and allow their staff to take that time to come and help. "We really encourage them to help us with this program." Information line set up in wake of meningitis death Durham Region's health department has established a meningi- tis information line in the wake of the death last week of a Whitby woman from the dis- ease. The department con- firmed Friday that the death of the 56-year-old woman, a teacher at Dr. C.F. Cannon Public School in Oshawa, was caused by meningococ- cal meningitis. She passed away Thursday (Dec. 2). Since the woman's death the health department has been in contact with her family to recommend precau- tions to prevent further illness. Health officials have also been in con- tact with staff and stu- dents at the school, but Dr. Reynolds insisted that there is no per- ceived risk to the public, and no precautions are required by the school. Meningitis is usually spread through the exchange of saliva through actions such as kissing, or sharing food, drinks or cigarettes. Symptoms of the ill- ness include fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck, drowsiness, confusion and body rash. If any of these symptoms become apparent, a doctor should be consulted immediately. A meningitis infor- mation line was set up by the regional health department Friday. It can be reached at 905- 723-8521, or 1-800-841- 2729, ext. 2124.
