Ms Page said in a memo to OSSTF District 13 mem- bers that "the shortsighted strategy of brining charges against the union and cer- tain if its members and offi- cers failed to resolve the problems confronting our secondary schools." Meanwhile, Durham secondary school students continue to go without all but a few extracurricular activities until at least April of 2000, when both sides will sit down and begin to hammer out a new collective agreement. Board spokesman Craig Burch said that although the motions before the labour relations board have been discontinued, the board's position remains unchanged. The board has insisted all along that the teachers' refusal to take part in extracurricular activities amounts to an illegal strike action. "Our position on that remains unchanged," said Mr. Burch. "It is simply a matter of timing" Mr. Burch said of the board's decision to drop the labour board action, citing the fact that the matter would not be heard for some months. Contract talks are slated to begin before a hearing would occur. : The matter of a job description for teachers -- which would include specifics on extracurricu- lar activities -- remains a priority for the board, he said. "Someone, either the (labour relations board) or the provincial government, must tackle this matter, and they must tackle it within the next 24 months," he said. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew said that while she is saddened at the lack of progress towards restoring sports and other after school events for students, she understands the board's reasoning for with- drawing the complaint. "We could not have been heard before the labour board before collective bar- gaining begins in the spring," she said. Mrs. Drew vowed to work toward such an agree- ment. "We will do whatever we can to restore these pro- grams for the kids," she said. "We are looking at every possible option." T--_--.|vwe
