The Shepstone Petites took part in Port Perry's annual ringette tournament this past weekend and played outstanding. The action began on Friday against Mariposa. Although the play was rough our girls didn't back down a bit, in fact some of them thoroughly enjoyed the intensity. Carley Churchill set up one of Lauren Guthrie's two goals to get Shepstone rolling. Caitlyn Hellingman scored three times and Kim Wilson also popped one to lead the home side to a decisive 7-2 win. - Sunderland came to town for a 7 a.m. game on Saturday but probably wished they didn't as Port Perry scored nine times to their one. Ceri Boomsma and Ashley Morton scored twice and Kim notched the hat trick. Allyson Pehlemann had four assists and Lesley Donovan also set up one. Julie Tapper played well and was instrumental in two goals. The real challenge came from the traditionally strong Whitby team. As fate would have it Shepstone played Whitby twice on Sunday, the last game being the championship tilt. . In the first game Caitlin Dunn set up a beauty by the ever improving Jamie Steranka to lead Shepstone to a 3-1 win. The grand finale showcased some of the best goaltending in recent memory. Port's Lyndsay Whyte battled Whitby's Cassandra Able making a spectacular save for Port Perry in the final minute to keep the game tied at five. Lauren played strong and scored twice as did Caitlyn. Kim also scored but a deflection in the final minute gave Whitby the 6-5 decision. A great showing of sportsmanship and talent kept the crowd buzzing. Lyndsay won the MVP in the final game. A great tournament girls. JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR Host Cobourg hands Port Peewees the loss in final The Port Perry Pee Wee number one team played in a tournament over the Nov. 27 weekend which was hosted by our good friends in Cobourg. Game one was early in the morning versus the host team. The Port team was a little slow, but man- aged to get on the board first with a goal from Keenan Geer, assisted by Shane Jeffrey and Matt Roth. Cobourg tied it up a minute later. In the second period Cobourg scored the only goal and then went ahead 3-1 with a goal midway through the third. They wrapped it up with an empty netter in the last minute. Port would have to win its next two games for a chance to still get in the final and Danny Halward, who played tough at defense in this game, would have to sit out with an injury. Game two was against Port Hope and ended up as a 3-0 win for Port Perry with all the scoring in the first period. Kyle Mullins scored his goal unassisted. Matt Menear scored with assists from Dave Stewart and Tyler Cunningham, and Blake Cunningham banged in the final goal with assists from Tyler and Dave. Goalies Mark Carnaghan and Leo Taillon shut 'em out. Kristy Ashton played her usual very solid game as a defensive defenseman, and Taylor Churchill was key on defense. Game three was against a Clarington team that turned out to be an easy opponent for Port who won 6-1. Goalscorers were Kyle Mullins, Tyson Savage, Matt Menear, Keenan Geer, Tyler and Blake Cunningham. Assists went to Tyler (two), Dave Stewart (two), Justin Jimmo (two), Scott Martin, Blake, Matt Roth and Shane. This win put Port in the final against Cobourg. Port came out in the final with a much better game against Cobourg. Action was back and forth Turn to Page 22 THREE ON ONE: The host Shepstone Petites came up just short last weekend when they dropped a 6-5 decision to Whitby in the tournament final after the opposition scored with less than a minute remaining in the game. The Petites got to the final after defeating Mariposa 7-2, Sunderland 9-1, and Whitby 3-1. Their luck, however, ran out in the final game of the weekend as Whitby edged past them to claim the title. Goaltender Lyndsay Whyte got the MVP nod for the final game. Rolling right along Modacks hit their stride as they put together a three-game winning streak with weekend wins over the Georgina Ice and arch-rival Uxbridge Bruins By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Ryan McQuade would like to have more weekends like the last one. McQuade had four goals in two games for the Port Perry ModJacks, helping his team to identical 4-2 victories over the Georgina Ice and the Uxbridge Bruins. While the Port Perry native is happy to see the puck going in the net for him, of more importance are the four points which stren- thened the ModJacks' hold on third place in the Central Junior C stand- ings and kept them within two points of second place Uxbridge. The Modacks now have 26 points, five ahead of Georgina and seven up on the faltering Little Britain Merchants who will be the opposition for this coming Sunday night's game at the Scugog Arena. The wins over the Ice and the Bruins had some striking similari- aties. In both games, the MoJacks built what seemed to be a fairly comfortable lead until the third period. They were up 3-0 over the Ice and 4-0 on the Bruins before sur- rendering a goal to the opposition. Head coach Tom Thornbury was more than happy with the two- game performance, stating simply, "This was a real good weekend. We played very well Saturday night and again here (in Port Perry) tonight." Against the Bruins at the Scugog Arena, McQuade opened the scor- ing at 13:53 of the first, finishing off a three-way passing play from Jay Simmonds and Dale Drummond. That score stuck until well into the second period when Shane Norton showed a deft scoring touch of his own. With the puck on his backhand he drifted across the crease and waited just long enough for Bruin netminder Ian Watson to hit the ice before lofting a shot into the corner. Kevin Coates and Bill Beaulieu drew the assists. Three minutes later, McQuade got his second of the game when he outraced a Bruin defender for a puck inside the line, and he too used the backhand to beat Watson. Simmonds and rear-guard Matt Glen took the assists on that one. Just seconds later, McQuade had a great chance for his third of the game, but he was foiled when Watson got a glove on the puck before it crossed the line. The final goal came early in the third as Adam Metherall cashed in a big rebound off Watson's pads after John Werry took the initial shot from the right side. Jeff Mackie was just three min- utes and change away from a shutout in this one. And he cer- tainly would have deserved one for the number of tough stops he was forced to make. ~ But three straight minor penal- ties late in the third caught up to the ModJacks. After killing two of them, the ModJacks allowed Bruin captain Allan Racette to get free in the slot and his shot just trickled over the line. That goal came after Turn to Page 22 tf Aryl sangha aca a AE <b JS a. - gg ED: Sug I A. JES. i J: Ju A pot SY --. G0 --" ti ct carn
