Mrs. Meldrum said MADD recognizes the efforts police make to combat drunk driving. It 1s her hope that having the extra breathalyzer units on the road will help officers detect impaired drivers, and secure convictions against guilty parties. "We know the geo- graphical area the Port Perry police have to cover 1s so immense, and they need all the equipment they can get," said Mrs. Meldrum last week. "Today we're going to see the efforts of MADD to stop drunk driving." Staff Sgt. Mike Ewles of 26 Division said the breathalyzer unit received last week will definitely help officers on patrol, especially as they mount their effort to com- bat holiday-related drinking and driving. While Durham Police are setting up regular RIDE roadside checks -- they've nabbed 27 impaired dri- vers so far, indicating the numbers are up this year -- it's important that offi- cers on regular patrol have the equipment they need to detect drunk dri- ving as well, he said. Sgt. Ewles said 26 Division officers patrol an area that's 1,300 square km in size, and have in the past "strate- gically located" their breathalyzer devices in order to administer tests in a timely fashion, as is required by law. "We'll have better cov- erage with these (new units) on the road," said Sgt. Ewles. He added that while police are always budget- ing for new equipment that will help them per- form their job better, donations such as the one made last week by MADD can help expedite the process. "Any kind of partner- ships are beneficial," he said of the organization's effort. For her part, Mrs. Meldrum expressed deep concern over higher inci- dents of drunk driving, which are being reported by police RIDE programs here and elsewhere. She said her organization will continue its fight through cooperative efforts with police, and educational programs which include public speaking engage- ments. Mrs. Meldrum noted that Durham Region is currently served by the Toronto chapter of MADD. She encouraged anyone interested in establishing a chapter here to contact MADD's head offices in Mississauga.
