Turn to Page 20 Festive MoJacks give away two points to the Merchants Port Perry hands an easy 4-1 victory to the visiting Little Britain Merchants with continuous parade to the penalty box By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star There was little Christmas cheer for the Port Perry MoJacks as they found them- selves on the wrong end of a 4- 1 score in Jr. C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. It was the annual MoJack's Christmas Night with a visit from Santa and lots of free gift draws for kids and adults alike. But if the MoJacks had any notion of an early celebration, the Merchants had other ideas, especially netminder Jared Ruston who came up with a stellar game to lead his squad to the victory. The Merchants have cer- tainly had ModJacks' number so far this season as they have won all three games to date. The ModJacks won't have to wait very long for another chance to break the goose-egg as the teams hook up this Wednesday night (Dec. 22) in Little Britain at 8 p.m. The ModJacks actually drew first blood in Sunday's game when Bill Beaulieu got the puck behind Ruston early in the first on a set-up from Shane Norton. But things quickly went down-hill for the green and white as Merchant veteran Jeremy Farr evened things a few minutes later and Jeff Parsons put the visitors up for good before the end of the first. The MoJacks had two men in the penalty box on Parsons' goal. It was a familiar pattern through the game as the ModJacks took a host of penal- ties -- some deserved and some that were iffy, at best. In fact, the MoJacks took 13 minors and the Merchants just six. And captain Jeff Clarke got tossed in the second after being called on a checking- from-behind infraction, which was marginal at best. Jon Perrin and captain Chad Purdy rounded out the scoring for the Merchants with three of the four goals coming on the power play. ModJack's head coach Tom Thornbury refused to point fin- gers at the ref's calls after the game, saying instead that the team simply "did not play a very smart game." He said the Merchants seem to have a knack for goading and needling the MoJacks into foolish penalties. "They are able to take advan- tage of this," he said. And Thornbury gave credit to the goaltending by Ruston who Joined the Merchants recently after playing Junior A in both Lindsay and Cobourg. "Any momentum we were able to build in the game seemed to be taken away from us by a foolish penalty or a key save," said the head coach. "And they (Merchants) were doing a great job clogging up the slot (in front of Ruston) and the neutral zones." As for the rematch on Wednesday night, Thornbury said he'll ask his team to "play a more physical" style, but within the rules at the same time. SLAPSHOTS: In other action recently, Lakefield suf- fered its first loss this season against Campbellford; Bobcaygeon downed the Merchants, as did North Frotenac, 6-1; and the second place Uxbridge Bruins put more distance between themselves and the MoJacks with two wins over Picton (7-4) and Georgina (7-2). Flashy, high-scoring for- ward Stu Parrish is apparently back full time with the Bruins and his presence will only spell trouble for opposing teams. ModJack's defenseman Matt Glenn may be a doubtful starter for Wednesday's game as he banged up his knee and shoul- der after sliding heavily into the boards. But Darrin Forbes is likely to be in the line-up against the Merchants. He has joined the ModJacks as a defenseman with plenty of size and toughness. Forbes played for the team towards the end of last season and was a positive presence on the ice. Next home action for the ModJacks will be Sunday, Jan. 2 when first place Lakefield Chiefs visit the Scugog Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Turn to Page 20
