Nutrition Pros | Delays in ER continue, say hospital officials By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Lakeridge Health offi- cials = are reminding potential patients that they could be in for a long wait for emergency treatment. Last week, doctors at the Port Perry hospital attended to nearly twice as many patients in the emergency room as they have in years past during the same time frame, said Nancy Bennett, director of communica- tions. "Over the: four days between Dec. 24 and 28, more than 340 people were admitted (in the emergency room). That's certainly substantially more than in other years," she said. Officials haven't pin- pointed any reasons for the rush to the local hos- pital this year. "We really don't know "why... it could be just about anything. All our. emergency rooms are very busy and we do have a shortage of staff, with them either being on holidays or sick them- selves," said Ms Bennett. "The flu bug has also hit the area quite hard... we're jMSt assuming it's all of those reasons com- bined, and it's as simple as that." However, Ms Bennett said thos¢" who are in need of medical atten- tion should not put off making a trip to their local hospital. Every patient who is admitted will be prioritized depending on their con- dition. "If you have no choice but to come in, come in. They (doctors and staff) understand, that's what they're there for. But, if Mrs. Merlin Dowson you have other options, then please, use them," she said. "It just depends on where you fit into the triage; we deal with the most ill first. The person beside you may get taken care of first. "While a doctor will see you, chances are you will wait awhile," she said, explaining that most ERs have one doc- tor working with another on standby. "The doctors on call have been working a lot this year," she added. (ACROSS FROM PORT PERRY HOSPITAL) What Happens When We Diet? by Bronwen Tuck RD Did you know that by eating too little vou can actually gain weight? When a person loses more than 1-2 pounds per week the body identifies this restriction as famine and tries to protect itself. The metabolism (rate at which the body burns calories) slows and the body uses fewer calories. The result is you must eat less and less to lose weight. The body desperate to protect itself against starvation wants food and so you naturally develop irresistible cravings for high-fat foods and break your diet. Just in case it might be starved again, the body stores a little extra and eventually you weigh more than before. So. how do we stoke up the metabolism? Never skip meals. Edt frequent small balanced meals according to Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Exercise also revs up metabolism and benefits can be maintained even after exercise is completed. Try walking 20-30 minutes every other day.
