LACING THEM UP: More than $3,000 was raised for the construction of a second ice pad when a Skate-A-Thon was held at the Scugog Arena last Sunday afternoon. Organizers report that there was tremendous support from the public for the fundraising and the actual skate, including help from Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden, seen here lending Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt a hand tying his skates. The Tyke House League team Van Camp/Keller brought in the top group amount -- a total of $925 -- and will have a pizza party for their efforts. The top three individual pledge collectors were Brian Stephen, who gathered $725 and received a prize of $250; Ken Gadsden, who col- lected $315 and received $150; and Doug Moffatt, who gathered $205 in pledges and took home $75. A charity hockey game will also be held next month to raise funds for the second ice pad. IT EIGA SATURDAY, WEIN JANUARY 22 PORT PERRY Mojacks vs. Napanee All Minor Hockey Players admitted FREE! McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks were able to inch their way a tiny bit closer to second place in the Central Junior C standings after splitting a pair of interlocking games over the weekend. They nipped Amherstview 4-3 on home ice Saturday night, but went down in defeat 5-3 Sunday afternoon in North Frontenac. The two points, coupled with a 4-4 Uxbridge tie Friday night against Lakefield, leaves the MoJacks with 33 points, just two. back of the Bruins. But the Georgina Ice, who defeated Little Britain Friday night, also have 33 points, so there is a three-team log-jam battling it out for second spot in the standings. The MoJacks enjoy a game in hand over the Bruins. The MoJacks got the weekend off on the right foot Saturday night at the Scugog Arena with an exciting 4- 3 victory over the Amherstview Jets, a team fighting for the final playoff spot in the Empire League. And it was Port Perry native Shane Norton who pro- vided much of the scoring punch as he fired a hat trick, including the winner with just over half a minute to play in the third period. The MoJacks were cruising through the third period with what looked like a comfortable 3-1 lead when the visitors suddenly struck twice inside two minutes to knot things at three each. The Jet goals came at 14: 05 from Chris Cox, his second of the match, and at 16:04 by Jason Withers. With overtime looming, the trio of Norton, Adam Jones and Dale Drummond once again spun some scoring magic for the MoJacks. Drummond took a pass deep in the Jet's zone from Jones who fed the puck across the goal mouth to Norton who was un-guarded at the right side and he had virtually the entire cage to deposit the winner. It was Norton who opened the scoring in this one, just 27 seconds into the first period, and with assists from the same two linemates. The Jets' Chris Cox tied it midway through the first on a power play and the score stood at 1-1 until late in the middle frame when Derek Tindall gave the MoJacks a 2-1 lead. Tindall is a tireless checker for the MoJacks and on this play he showed a deft scoring touch as he took a pass from Ryan McQuade and swept the puck quickly behind netminder Ryan Zurrer. Jay Simmonds drew the other assist. Norton collected his second of the match at 7:55 of the third, on the power play with assists to Jones and Drummond. The goal came from in close with the MoJacks putting on pressure deep in the Jets' zone. Jeff Mackie, who has been holding a hot hand between the pipes of late, was not as busy as his counterpart in the Jets' cage, but he had to be sharp on several tricky scoring efforts especially early in the third when the Jets worked hard to even the score. Mackie has given up just five goals in the last three games -- all wins for the MoJacks. The Jets looked anything like a team in last place in the Empire League with just 20 points and struggling to catch Campbellford (26 points) for the fourth place and the final playoff spot. Staked to some fine netminding by Zurrer, the Jets refused to give an inch to the MoJacks, even when down 3-1 late in the third period. Sunday afternoon in North Frontenac, the MoJacks again ran into a hot goaltender in Ben Laughlan and came home on the short end of a 5-3 margin in a game that could have vaulted the team into a second-place tie with the Bruins.
