The provincial government announced Friday moming that it will offer Toronto assistance to cover the operational costs of a police helicopter. That amount is believed to be a subsidy for about one- quarter of the total cost, or approximately $250,000, said Mayor O'Connor, a member of Durham's Police Services Board. But the Tory government will have to be fair if it starts hand- ing out cash for police helicopter programs, she said. "If the province is going to commit to Toronto, then they're going to have to deal with all the municipal- , ities the same way. O'Connor The province will have a difficult time with subsidizing Toronto and- not the other municipalities in the GTA," said Mayor O'Connor. The announcement from the province comes almost a month after the Durham Regional Police Service extended a six- Stolen museum artifacts are found in Quebec A large number of arti- facts stolen from the Scugog Shores Historical Museum last fall have been returned, safe and sound. The items, which were stolen from the Centre School building on Scugog Island, were val- ued at more than $50,000. They were discovered in the shop of an antique dealer in Hull, Quebec on Jan. |. The owner had read an article about the theft in The Upper Canadian, a publication with a large distribution among antique dealers, which included a list of the items taken. The dealer contacted police and the Scugog museum was informed of the whereabouts of their artifacts. The items were returned by the Hull dealer. An arrest warrant has been issued for a 34- year-old Barrie-area man in connection with the theft. 2:00pm - Mavviage [0 » 5 Oth Wedding Anniversary in honor of Gerry & Tina Vanderby Sunda , January at the Oddfellows Hall, Simcoe St., Port Perry = All Welcome - Best Wishes Only! --- James & Elizabeth Culp Port Perry's Anglican Church The happy couple enjoyed a honeymoon in New Orleans Garett Hazelwood Oct. 2, 1999 in Bridgewater, NS. ) JS Kristal and Garett both work, as N well as reside, in Miramichi, NB. Durham had been sharing the chopper with York Region Police since the original six-month trial period began last June, but the neighbouring municipality backed out of the program when discussions over renewing the lease for the helicopter were held last month. Last week it was announced that a secret donor had come forth with $750,000 to be used to purchase a helicopter for the York police. "It certainly sheds a different light on the whole situation. Now we have to ask ourselves if we can afford (a helicopter)," said Mayor O'Connor of the recent devel- opment. The fact that York officials neglected to inform Durham Region that they had found money to buy a chopper - instead of stating that they didn't have the cash to participate in the joint project - frustrates Mayor O'Connor. "It certainly looks like they knew they had the helicopter before we had our talks," she said. The chopper issue will be brought up at the next Police Services Board meeting Thursday in Oshawa. Since going into ser- vice here last year Air-1 has been involved in a number of operations, including large-scale drug seizures, which have impressed services board members.
