Superintendent for Programs Bev Freedman told trustees last week that reserve funds to top up special educa- tion programs are no longer available for the coming budget year. She said that may result in further "adjust- ments" to special education delivery in the region. "Last year we mainstreamed many of our special education students into regular classrooms in response to the provincial funding changes," said Ms Freedman. "Our concerns for the coming year include the fact that provincial funding formulas do not allow for growth in the population of our special education students." Ms Freedman told trustees that although new students needing special education programs are arriving in Durham Region on a regular basis, cur- rent funding allows only for students identified as needing the programs at the beginning of the budget year. "Our student population in this, and all areas, changes," said Ms Freedman. "The funding, unfortunately, currently does not." Ms Freedman told trustees that school boards from across the province will be meeting at the Durham District School Board headquarters on Thursday (Jan. 20) to discuss problems faced by all boards in special educa- tion funding, and work on solutions and suggestions 'that can then be passed on to the provincial govern- ment. She again called for parents of stu- dents in special education programs to stay current with their children's schools on programs and delivery changes. Bank soon to be wheelchair accessible People in wheelchairs will soon find it easier to get in and out of the Royal Bank in Port Perry. Scugog council has agreed in principle to an encroach- ment onto the municipal sidewalk in front of the bank to allow for a wheelchair ramp. A delegation of bank officials including manager Marva Collins told council Monday afternoon that the ramp will be just over four feet wide, enough to allow two people to pass on the ramp. And the railing and design of the ramp will attempt to reflect the Victorian heritage of buildings on Queen St. The ramp will start at the main doors to the bank and Police investigate threatening message at Port high school The Durham Regional vandals left letters and Police street crimes unit numbers on a wall, with a was called to Port Perry date indicating some- High School last week thing would happen. after a threatening mes- Police are unsure of sage was left in a boys' what the message means, washroom. and are continuing their Sometime on Jan. 10 investigation. | DURHAM COUNSELLING SERVICES] FOR Families & Individuals Specializing In: ® Step Families ® Relationships e Abuse Counselling ® Children & Teens ® Depression i & ; 5 8 i: call Suzanne Doupe Office in Port Perry as well as Lind:ay HAVE YOU NOTICED Scugog Christian School has a new school sign? Dick Nicholson, a private citizen, told council how peo- ple in wheelchairs depend on ramps such as these to access buildings for services such as banking. He said his wife has been in a wheelchair for three years, and as the population ages more and more people will be using chairs, walkers and the electric scooters. The agreement in principle is subject to negotiations between bank officials and Township staff for an encroachment permit as well as other conditions such as de-icing in winter and removal of the ramp should the bank ever re-locate to another premises.
