"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Veteran cop signing off Doug Park's been on the job in Durham for more than 30 years By Chris Hall Port Perry Star rs Doug Park officially called it a career last week, handing in his badge after 32 years of service. The veteran officer qui- etly finished his last day with the Durham Regional Police Service on Monday, Jan. 17 at Port Perry's 26 Division, handing in his uniform and gear and say- ing goodbye to numerous friends and colleagues he's worked with over the years. His career began in 1968 at the age of 21, when he accompanied a friend who was planning on applying to become an officer with the Oshawa force. Zaparanuik was arrested later in the month as he left an Oshawa court hearing, while Mr. Ball turned himself into police. Mr. Ball has been acquitted of breach of recognizance charges that arose from the inci- dent. Both men' have been in custody since their arrest'last year. Lawyers for the two accused say their clients intend to fight the charges vigorously. Two Port Perry men charged-as a result of a sting operation made a brief appearance in Oshawa court Friday to have their trial set for Feb. I. : William Zaparanuik, 22, and Steven Ball, 20, were charged last October with communi- cation for the purpose of prostitution and also face possession of a controlled substance -and breach probation charges. "It's been 32 years... it's time to pull the plug and move on," he said. "This is it, my last day; | wanted to work up until my last day, walk out the door and take the pension." "I didn't have a uniform or a gun or radio, just a suit jacket and a flashlight. I walked the beat from Centre St. to the shopping mall, checking doors and looking around." He attended the Ontario Police College, and upon graduating received his uniform and equipment. He was with the Oshawa force when it was amalgamated into the Durham Regional Police Service in 1974. "Police officers are under a lot more scrutiny now than they were before," said Sgt. Park, looking back over the years. "There is less respect for officers now... things were done a lot dif- ferently then than they are now."
