"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 25, 2000 - 3 Politicians join chorus on NHL bail-out plan By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The federal government's ill-fated plan to aid Canada's six professional hockey teams was heavily criticized here by local politicians last week. Federal Industry Minister John Manley introduced a plan last Tuesday (Jan. 18) which would see the Canadian government come up with approximately $3 million in tax breaks and cash for each of the country's six National Hockey League teams. After two days of public outcry, the federal government pulled the offer. While Durham MP Alex Shepherd was on vacation and unable to comment on the announcement, his executive assistant, John MacDonald, told The Star that the local rep was not in favour of the plan. "He's totally against it," said Mr. MacDonald last week. "There are other priorities to look at. Yes, hockey is our national winter sport and it does mean a great deal to most Canadians, but (the NHL) is part of the business and entertainment industry... this government is more worried about amateur sports such as minor hockey, not professional hockey. "The (franchise) owners should have the intestinal for- titude to sit down with the players and figure out a way to save themselves. They shouldn't hold a gun to the head of taxpayers." Mr. MacDonald said that Mr. Shepherd had met with the owners and general managers of a number of Canadian NHL teams in the past and none had convinced the local MP that government help was essential to their survival. "They couldn't convince him then, and they still haven't. He is, without a doubt, against a plan to help them." Durham MPP John O'Toole was also against the feder- al government's short-lived aid package. Thieves steal tires, rims from lot Durham Police were called to Philp Pontiac Buick last week after thieves stole all four tires and rims from a vehicle parked on the lot. Police report that sometime between 2. a.m. on Jan. 19 and 7 a.m. on Jan. 20 thieves jacked up a 1996 GMC Jimmy and removed the tires and rims. The vehicle had just been returned from a lease agreement. It's touched a nerve with me; I don't want to pay Wayne Gretzky's salary and I'm going to stop buying his aspirin," said Mr. O'Toole last week, adding that he has received a number of "irate" calls on the subject. "The Liberals spend $5 million here and $5 million there... hey, we have a doctor shortage here and home- less. It's a good thing they withdrew their offer; they final- ly listened to the people and cut their losses". Since 1995 two Canadian teams have either been sold or moved to the United States because of high taxes and a low Canadian dollar. The Quebec Nordiques moved to Colorado and became the Avalanche in 1995, and the Winnipeg Jets were moved to Phoenix and became the Coyotes a year later. There are fears that other small-market teams, such as the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators, could be sold and moved south of the border in the next few years.
