Their Immaculate Conception peers have made a gift of a locally- made sculpture to mark the new school's opening. Created by local woodcarver Adam Connolly, the cedar sculpture of the Good Shepherd was presented to representatives from the new school Thursday (Jan. 27) at Immaculate Conception = Catholic School during a special ceremony. Mr. Connolly was approached _ by Immaculate Conception officials last year. and commissioned to create the piece. "They came up and asked me around the end of last September, and 1 said sure but I told them it might take me awhile," said Mr. Connolly, who's employed as a stage hand in Toronto. "I worked on it here and there for about three months... they wanted it for around the end of October but | couldn't really do it right away so | finished it up around the beginning of January." Working from a six- inch porcelain figure of the Good Shepherd, Mr. Connolly turned a 100- year-old cedar stump into what will now be the centre-piece of the new school's main lobby. "I used the figure and some of my own ideas to come up with an abstract carving.This was my first time carving a person; | usually do wildlife carv- ings," said Mr. Connolly. "l was really flattered to be asked to do a carv- ing for the school, it was a challenge. | enjoyed doing it and I'm really glad that they liked it." The search for a statue to present to the Good Shepherd began in Ontario, spread across Canada and into the United States and even went as far as Italy, Spain and France, said Immaculate Conception principal Rick Bunt. "We had run out of places to search and it was then suggested that we get one made," said Mr. Bunt. "This is incredible, unique and personal. The best idea is what we ended up with, and it was done by someone in the community." Also applauding Mr. Connolly's work was Brenda O'Donoghue, principal of Good Shepherd Catholic School. "It is wonderful and amazing and it's a bless- ing that they didn't find a statue anywhere else, because nothing could be as beautiful as this," she said. Police were called to the complex around 4:40 a.m. on Jan. 23 after a man reported that a south side window in his apartment had been smashed. Officers arrived at the scene and spoke with a security officer. There are no suspects at this time. Damage to the window is estimated at more than $300. Accepting the Good Shepherd statue created by local woodcarver Adam Connolly on behalf of the Good Shepherd Catholic School last week were Ryan Wishak and Joanne Mooney.
