"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 1, 2000 - § It's February... time to have a Heart and Stroke canvassers hit the streets in Scugog this month By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star It's February, and that means that volunteers with the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be braving the cold once more, seeking donations for their annual fundraising canvass of Scugog. Some 190 canvassers, orga- nized by 23 area captains, will be fanning out across the town- ship for the duration of Heart and Stroke Month, says Scugog co-chair Gwen Taylor. "We're hoping to $28,000," said Mrs. Taylor. That's an ambitious goal for an area with a population of 18,000, but is a reflection of the enthusiastic response the drive is met with in this area, she said: "Last year our goal was $25,000, and we raised $28,000." A couple of factors figure into the ongoing success of the annual drive here, said Mrs. raise sonal illness or the loss of a loved one. Beginning today and continu- ing until the end of the month, canvassers will be knocking on doors, seeking donations. They will have identification and info kits issued by the foundation, and will be able to provide receipts for contributions. Areas scheduled for canvass- ing include Port Perry, Prince Albert, Greenbank, Seagrave, Manchester, Scugog Island, Robinglade, Castle Harbour, The Ridges, Cawker Creek, and Perryview Estates. Co-chairs of the local effort are Mrs. Taylor, Dorothy Gibson, Joyce Storry, and Judy Smith. They are proud of the contri- bution Scugog makes to the col- lective effort in the Durham East region, where it's expected some 1,000 volunteers altogeth- er will take part in the 2000 can- vass. heart | Taylor. First is the dedicated group of canvassers and orga- nizers who make sure the town- ship is canvassed, and the fact that residents expect a visit from Heart and Stroke Foundation volunteers during February. Another is the effect heart disease and stroke have had in the lives of so many people.
