REY NE TR Dra A ll ACR -- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 22, 2000 - 3 Group offers to sponsor RIDE program here By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Durham Regional Police Service is looking to team up with MADD Canada in an effort to reduce impaired driving this summer. An offer was presented to Durham Regional Police Service Board members last Thursday (Feb. 16) in Oshawa that would see the Toronto chapter of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving organization pro- vide funds for a RIDE pro- gram here in Durham on Friday, May 19, the begin- ning of the first long week- end of the summer. Any large sum of money offered to the police ser- vice as a donation must be okayed by the police ser- vices board, said North Durham Inspector Chuck Mercier. The local MADD chapter is proposing an offer of a little less than $2,000. That would cover a 10-hour, eight-person RIDE pro- gram which would make its way throughout Durham that evening. In return, MADD officials are asking to join the offi- cers in their tour of the region, using signage to let motorists know the RIDE initiative is being spon- sored by the organization and to raise the public's awareness of their endeav- ours. Durham Police offi- cers will continue to con- duct their own RIDE pro- grams throughout the weekend. "They would like to con- Chuck Mercier tinue their partnership with us, and expand their role in reducing impaired driving and making it a front and centre commuyni- ty effort," he said. This promotion will be part of MADD's "Signs of Summer" event, just one of many programs the organi- zation runs across Canada to help reduce drunk dri- ving. This will be the first time MADD has sponsored a RIDE program in Durham, but they have held other similar initiatives with other police forces across Ontario. Late last year, the Toronto MADD chapter donated three roadside breathalyzers to the Durham Regional Police Service, one of which made its way to North Durham. "Their goal is to reduce death or injuries on our roadways due to impaired driving, which is something we all want. "This is a great partner- ship which will be benefi- cial for everyone, especial- ly the public." Shop owners appear on theft charges By Rik Davie Special to the Star Two Manchester body shop owners charged in relation to the seizure of more than $100,000 worth of stolen property made an appearance in court last week. Fifty-nine-year-old Gary Grant of Westhill and his 32-year-old son Derek Grant of Manchester face five charges each for the possession of stolen property over $5,000. Their lawyer, Michael Block of Toronto, said the case will be set over for about two weeks as he awaits disclosure of the allegations against his clients. They are charged in relation to the seizure by O.P.P. and Durham Regional Police of several stolen vehicles, tools and other items valued in excess of $100,000 at a Manchester auto body shop last November. Police officers from as far afield as Barrie partici- pated in the execution of a search warrant on Preferred Auto Body and Refinishing, where officers from the provincial auto theft task force seized prop- erty alleged to have been stolen. Some of the items seized were said by officers at the time to have been traced to areas as far away as Alliston. Officers held a showing of the items seized at 26 Division to allow theft victims to attempt to identify some of the goods. Inspector Chuck Mercier said at the time, "through police investigations we hope other businesses like this will be found... so we can put a stop to it." A local man has plead- ed guilty in court to stealing a harness racing starting gate. Last Wednesday Justice John Payne heard in a crown synopsis of events how a gate used for training trotting hors- es was stolen from a Goodwood property sometime between August and October last year. The gate, valued at $14,000, had been unused by the owner for some time, and was stored in a remote area of his property. The crown said that after an investigation by 26 Division investigators, Man, 64, pleads guilty to theft of racing gate officers visited a resi- dence on Hwy. 47 and discovered the missing gate. The man admitted he had no permission to use the gate, and had dragged it a consider- able distance from the owner's property. He "thought it would be all right to use it for awhile". The 64-year-old man was found guilty of theft over $5,000 and, after expressing remorse to the court and making a $500 donation to Goodwill Industries, was given a conditional dis- charge along with a two- year probationary term.
