EEE EEE, "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 29, 2000 - 19 MoJacks looking towards better fortunes next winter Turn to Page 19 With Mackie on the bench, the man-power on the ice was even at five skaters each and in the final 20 seconds, Ryan McQuade won three straight faceoffs deep in the Ice zone, each time drawing the puck back to Metheral just inside the blue line. He managed to get a shot on goal each time, but the puck stayed out of the net. Penalties hurt the Mojacks badly through this game as the Ice have too much speed and too many clever scorers. And they seem to sense when a team is struggling and how to apply the knock-down punch. FINAL SLAPSHOTS: MoJack's captain and all- star defenseman Jeff Clarke finally returned to the line- up for Games 3 and 4 in the series after missing several games due to a transfer with his job to the Montreal area. As expect- ed, Clarke played his heart out, but the lack of games hurt his conditioning and he appeared to be near exhaustion by the third period of Game 3. Still, it was a gutsy effort. The Ice coaching staff said that Clarke's absence from the lineup in the first two games certainly helped their team to 3-1 and 6-2 wins. The second game may have been the key in this series. The Ice pretty much had things all their own way in this one, breezing to a 6-2 victory right on Port's home ice. It was a huge momentum builder and no doubt elevated the confidence levels of the og Duplicate Phinney, Minnie team tops i in Scugog Duplicate Bridge Club action First and Second - > Doris 5 i 5 Table Howell - Avg. 48 Together, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Scugog Chamber of Commerce is actively seeking volunteers to help with Summerfest at the Port Perry Fairgrounds July 6-9 /2000 Please call 985-4971 to volunteer we can make it happen! - Rol ert Boyko ji ORTHODONTIST Dr. Nan Baldan PERIODONTIST ® INSURANCE ASSIGNMENT ACCEPTED ® EVENING APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE (WE COLLECT FROM INSURANCE COMPANIES) m DENTISTRY WHILE YOU SLEEP ® PAYMENT PLANS ARRANGED ® SENIOR CITIZENS DISCOUNT ® GENERAL ANAESTHESIA AVAILABLE NEW PATIENTS WELCOME eo IESEEETON [C8 462 PAXTON ST. Penalties played a key part in the series as Georgina has a devastating power play. And on more than one occasion, the Mojacks hurt their own chances by taking a penalty while enjoying a man advantage. And some of those were of the need- less variety. While going out four straight is a bitter pill for any team, this MoJack squad was a vast improve- ment over the previous season when they missed the playoffs. This year, the club finished second with 47 points (in 40 games) and on most nights pro- vided their fans with excit- ing Junior C hockey. However, they had the mis-fortune to run up against a Georgina squad in the opening round that was peaking at exactly the right moment, and showed far more in the playoffs than they did during the regular schedule where the teams split the six games at three wins each. Perhaps the biggest dis- appointment over the sea- son was the lack of support from this community. In an & Happy Mikayla Tafertshofer Brian and Carolyn Morton of Blackstock proudly announce the forthcoming Michelle Lynn CONGRATULATIONS era now where Junior C hockey is a tentative com- modity and clubs are in a constant struggle to sur- vive, it must have been disheartening on many nights for players and team officials to look into the stands of the Scugog Arena and see a lot of empty seats. Mojack general manager Murray Parliament and the coaching staff of Tom Thornbury, Scott Pinkerton and Sam Thornbury did an admirable job this season of putting an exciting team on the ice with a mix of imports and "home grown" talent. And they did it at a time when Junior C clubs are in dire competition for talent with the plethora of Junior B teams that have sprung up all over Ontario. For their efforts this sea- son, we salute Murray and the coaches, and wish the end had been on more of a positive note. As for the future, who knows? We can only hope that young, talented hock- ey players from this com- munity and beyond will continue to see the merits of Junior C hockey, and that the community in general will re-discover this unique aspect of life in small town Ontario. py Sth Birthday Cobpy Tafertshofer on March 1 2nd Birthday on March 27 All the best wishes with hugs & kisses from Omi & Opa, Nana & Poppa, all your aunts & uncles and cousins Michael and Sondra. marriage of ther daughter e to Sean David son of David and Lynn Stack of Arthur.
