According to an agreement struck recently with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations and the Ontario Casino Corporation, the town- ship stands to receive a cut of the slot machine revenues at the Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino. After payouts, 5 per cent of the net revenue will be passed along to the local native band, which in turn will write Scugog Township a cheque for 1.5 per cent of that amount. An addi- tional half-per cent of that 5 per cent cut will go to Durham Region. The slot machines are expected to be open to the public next month. Casino management shut down the bingo hall last August, and began renovations for the installation of slot machines at that time. "We don't know what the figures will be and when we'll even begin to see the money. We could be looking at $10,000, $50,000 or half- a-million dollars... we don't know, and we haven't (allocated) any- thing in the (2000) bud- get noting those rev- . enues," said the mayor. He hopes to have a pol- icy statement on the issue put together on the matter by June. "We want to have a municipal form that will see any money from the casino -- for the first three months of each year -- put into a special fund where it will stay and nobody will touch it. Once it gets to a size- able amount -- SI mil- lion? -- then maybe we'll use the interest to help offset some costs," he said. "This year is an experimental year; we'll see what we get and use it as it comes in." Mayor Moffatt was quick to point out that the township isn't receiving money for nothing in its arrange- ment with the casino. "This doesn't come without a cost," he warned. "It's not all gravy; at some point we have to worry about infrastructure costs." Those costs could include maintenance of the Island Rd., the route gamblers must take to get to the casino, he said.
