"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Star publisher Peter Hvidsten included in Historical Society panel discussion on "Protecting the character of a small Ontario town" Pine Ridge Garden Club We all had a very enjoyable dinner at our pot luck supper which swung the garden club into another year of great activi- ties. Members fees were collect- ed for the year, $8 for single peo- ple or $12 per family. This is actually nothing when you are aware of the great speakers we have and the activities of the year. These items are all found in the year book which was issued to each member or family at that meeting. We had at least six new mem- bers join our membership for the first time and I'm glad to report they are younger people. | regret that two outstanding members passed away who were active in the garden club through the years, Mrs. Dorothy Lee and Mr. Alan Love. Pat Kingstone showed slides on English villages and their gar- dens editing them by explaining their whereabouts in the U.K. The garden club covers a radius of 25 miles and it was great to see all our members which we had missed during the winter months. Next meeting will be April 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Nestleton Hall. Don't forget the Home and Garden Show on March 16, 17, 18 and 19 at the International Centre, Airport Road. Lake Scugog Historical Society We had another most enjoy- able meeting last Thursday night. We made up a nomination com- mittee list for the election of officers for the coming year. We will be asking for other nomina- tions from the floor at the general meeting. The annual general meeting will be March 30 at the Town Hall 1873 at 7:30 p.m. Panel members will be Peter Hvidsten, Ken Gadsden, Marina Brock and Mike Wilson with the "Protecting the character of a small Ontario town." We discussed an Endowment Fund for the society and Vilma Giannini will look into the legal aspect of such a trust. A clarifica- tion of pioneer cemeteries from the Scugog Township council was placed in the hands of Bill Morrison to make a report. Caesarea Ratepayers A meeting is slated for March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Caesarea Hall. During the past year you can see some improvements of beauty taking place in our village. We wish to extend this program with the new signs, flowerbeds, and benches in our town and they are coming. The existing thoughts of our committee is to ask a member- ship fee of $5 per household. When we appear before council we represent the strength of this membership and not a small committee. Remember this could be election year. We have also been asked if we could do anything to bring in natural gas to our village. We know this was requested a year or so ago. Be sure to come out to this meeting on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. Shirley Love at one time headed up a beautify Caesarea campaign, but got little support. This week Shirley called and offered 100 tulip bulbs for this October as a memoriam to her late husband Alan. A living item which will last for years. Thanks Shirley, our committee will see that they are planted. Blackstock Lions We held our last Wednesday directors meeting at Lion Albert's home. Members were nominated Small Ontario towns topic of Society AGM discussion for election of officers for the coming years 2000 to 2001. March 15 at 7 p.m. will be a dinner meeting at the Blackstock Rec. Centre with Governor Paul Brand as guest speaker. We extend birthday greetings to Lion Don Cliff last Sunday, March 12 and Lion Howard Gauthier on Tuesday, March 14. Best wishes fellows. My wife Eileen's birthday is March 16. Joke of the Week A young looking business man in his early 50s noticed a young business lady paying special attention to him at various meet- ings. Finally she asked the per- sonal question, "Are you single?" Flattered and thinking this might be the start of something exciting he replied in fact he was. That's great she gushed because so is my mother. The One Liner The soap opera theme: Make them laugh, make them cry, and make them wait.
