12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 21, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Lung Association makes appeal for canvassers The Lung Association will be holding its annual door- to-door fundraising campaign from May | to 24 in Port Perry and needs the assistance of volunteers to ensure its success. "Volunteer team leaders and canvassers are needed, and training will be provided," says Howard Hall, door- to-door volunteer chair. "We need enthusiastic people to volunteer for just a few hours to help us raise vital funds to help prevent and eliminate lung disease." You can help as a canvasser by visiting your neigh- bours, or as a team leader by distributing and picking up materials from canvassers. Volunteers can choose a day and time convenient to them within the campaign period and will be fully trained. The total time required is approximately four ours. "Last year's campaign was extremely successful," said Mr. Hall. "With the continued gen- erosity of Port Perry residents, we hope to raise $5,000 this year." He was taking part in the Scugog Shores Museum's Spring Break Spectacular program. Family rescued from mud Durham Regional Police located and res- cued a Scarborough man and his family after they became stuck in mud in Cartwright Sunday after- noon. Police report that the victim, his two young children, aged 7 and 8, and the family dog were four-wheeling in their 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser in a bog on Byers Rd. around 6 p.m. on March 19 when they became stuck. The Scarborough man had no idea where he was, except that he was south of Shirley Rd. and west of Hwy. 57, say police. Durham Police were contacted at approxi- mately | a.m. on March 20 by the victim on his cell phone and immedi- ately began a search with two ATVs, a Canine Unit, and the service heli- copter, Air-1. An ambu- lance was also called to the scene. The vehicle was found approximately two kilo- metres east of Russell Rd and officers gave the vic- tims a ride back to the roadway, police say.
