A Ul i 14 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 21, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Pharmacy welcomes U of T students for training stints By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A Port Perry pharmacy has joined others across the GTA in becoming a training ground for univer- sity pharmacist students. Doug Brown, owner and pharmacist at Port Perry's Bruton Shoppers Drug Mart, has agreed to partic- ipate in a program which places students in com- munity pharmacies for eight weeks of hands-on training. It is administered by the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. Fourth-year students must complete 16 weeks 1o our little "Nut-Nut" Jayda "Bubbaloo" Callan Mommy, Daddy, Rachel, Benny, of such placements - including eight weeks at a community pharmacy and another eight weeks in a hospital pharmacy - as part of their Structural Practical Experience Program (SPEP). "We were pretty excit- ed. It's a great opportunity for us, a lot of work, but a great opportunity," said Mr. Brown. "I had to do about 100 hours of training on teaching and how to be an effective teacher." Students get valuable training in the placements, but also contribute to the stores in which they work, BIRTHDAY on March 22nd, 2000 LOVE Moo & Maggie said Mr. Brown. "We're advancing our product into patient care. Students coming out now are being taught to look after the customers much more, and not just pushing products across the counter," he said. "We always do what we can to help our customers, but now this student is bring it to us out of her classroom... she has some great ideas, and we're learning from each other." Alice Hogg of Toronto is currently participating in the program at Brutons Shoppers Drug Mart. There are approximate- ly 120 pharmacy students from the University of Toronto participating in the SPEP program at the moment, including anoth- er one at the hospital in Port Perry. Mr. Brown, who has another student at his Uxbridge store, hopes to welcome one student to each of his stores each semester next year.
