"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 21, 2000 -1 Event begins tomorrow Museum featured at garden show By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Scugog Shores Museum will have the opportu- nity to showcase itself once again this year at the Canada Blooms show, beginning tomorrow in Toronto. For a second year at the popular flower and garden show, the local museum will be located in the "Horticultural Happenings" section. A display will focus on Scugog's existing and future Ojibway Heritage Lands. The museum booth will also feature information on the European influence on horticul- ture in this area. The display will also include models of an Ojibway summer lodge as well as local historian Paul Arculus' model of the Lake Scugog steamboat Crandella. Museum officials Barbara Karthein and Susan Dutton have also been asked to speak in the Canadian Gardening Magazine Education series in and Early Settler Food, Medicinal and Sacred Plants" will begin at 11 a.m. The Scugog Shores Museum recently received a $15,000 grant from Canada Blooms to construct its Ojibway Heritage Lands. It features a variety of native species that were used and consumed by the area's indigenous peoples. "Part of the reason for the museum being at the show is for us to show (Canada Blooms) what the money is being used for," said Mrs. Karthein last week. "Hopefully the show will attract some new visitors to the museum, but it will also be helpful down the road for grants... they can see that we're putting the money to good use." Mrs. Karthein added that exposure created by hav- ing a booth at the show will also help to boost tourism in general to Port Perry and Scugog Township. COMING SOON!
