14 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 28, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Thieves steal gas Thieves made off with approximately $30 in gas after they took off from a gas station in Seagrave without paying. Durham Police say a four-door car, believed to have been a Honda, pulled up to Wannamaker's General Store around 6:10 p.m. on March 19 with several males inside. A male in the passenger seat behind the driver got out, pumped the gas, and then jumped back in the car before it took off, say police. Paxton road work may be moved up By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star One of the busiest streets in Port Perry may get repairs this year instead of next, after the matter came under discussion at a meeting of the township works committee Monday morning. Committee members instructed works department chief Rob Rodgers to find out how much it will cost to do the necessary repairs to Paxton Street, from Simcoe St. in the east to Old Simcoe Rd. in the west, so it can be included in budget discussions for this year. A long-term roads priority list has Paxton St. repairs and improvements slated for con- sideration in 2001. But Mr. Rodgers informed the committee Monday morning there have been several citizen inquiries about when the street will be repaired. He said the street accommodates heavy traffic because of the hospital and medical centre. Traffic will qnly increase, he told the com- mittee, with the development of the new Cawkers Creek subdivision on the west side of Old Simoce Rd. And a Paxton St. resident wrote to the committee that the intersection of Paxton and Simcoe St. has become dangerous because of increased traffic volumes, and the fact that southbound traffic on Simcoe now turns east onto Paxton to get to the downtown core. He writes that Paxton has now become a "main east-west corridor" for traffic, despite the fact the road is narrow, the ditches four feet deep in places, and it's a popular play area for young children. All of this he writes, is "a potential for dis- aster". Mr. Rodgers told councillors the entire length of Paxton should be repaired and upgraded this year, even if it means deleting another scheduled project from the town- ship's summer program of repairs and upgrades. | WAN @®I g BE INE DL BASH BN 04 VAN Di BJ.
