"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 28, 2000 - 15 Concerts to raise funds for church's new piano By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star Greenbank United Church is one step closer to getting a Grand piano. And on April 7 and 8 the country church is hosting two concerts to help raise funds for the cause. "It's our millennium project, and the funds raised will go towards the purchase of a new Grand piano," said church music director Linda Hunter. Ambitious fundraising efforts are not new to the congregation. In 1995 the church held a suc- cessful drive which saw a new organ put in the sanctuary. And in 1996, the church's centennial year, the interior of the church was painted and the stained glass windows refurbished. The addition of the new piano will definitely enhance the music pro- gram at the church, said Mrs. Hunter. "We have a lot of singers, and hold many concerts here," she said. "We're all excited about this project, and we feel § Greenbank United Church is holding a concert to raise funds towards the purchase of a new Grand piano. Pickering trustee Paul Crawford had been fighting for board approval of his initiative for more than a year. But Monday Oshawa trustee Kathleen Hopper made the motion to indefinite- ly table the letter, which she called "too vague and of not much value to the problem of youth smoking." Mr. Crawford demanded that the let- ter be voted on at Monday night's meet- ing. "It obviously won't pass this board, so let's vote on it," he said. "Let's do this properly, and get it out of the way." Board chair Doug Ross explained to Mr. Crawford that tabling the letter allowed for the matter to be brought up by the new board next year. "I am opposed to this," Mr. Crawford said. "I don't want to postpone this matter indefinitely. | want to postpone the mat- ter definitely." Mr. Crawford has been pushing for a ban on the possession and use tobacco by minors, and came up with his letter to the province as a way to get govern- ment action on the issue. Current provincial laws prohibit the sale of tobacco to minors. He said Monday night he had more information that might sway trustees toward supporting his effort. Trustees voted to table the motion indefinitely by a vote of 6 to 5. We're making room for new spring & summer stuff! one time clearance Hey dude!
