Flaxseeds are gaining popularity of late due to their potential health benefits. However the little brown seeds of the flax plant and the plant itself have been found to be useful for many centuries. Presently the interest in flaxseeds is due to it's content of alpha linolenic acid, lignans and fibre. Alpha linolenic acid is an omega 3, essential fatty acid which is an essential nutrient that are bodies cannot make for themselves. Also there is a theory that omega 3s may protect us from heart disease and lower blood cholesterol levels. Lignans are another component of flaxseeds that are phytoestrogens (a topic for another time) which may be protective against tumours of certain types of cancer. Flaxseeds are a source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibres could help lower blood cholesterol. Insoluble fibres are the kind that help keep bowel movements regular.
