pet "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 4, 2000 - 1 They'll seek estimates for an outdoor facility Scugog councillors talking pools once again By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star With summer not too far off, Scugog Parks and Recreation committee mem- bers are thinking swimming pool, again. Committee members agreed Monday morning to ask township staff to come up with a price tag for a new outdoor municipal pool. Scugog no longer has a municipally owned swimming facility after the clo- sure of the 60-year old pool at Birdseye Centre two years ago. The crumbling pool was deemed too costly to main- tain. When the matter came up for discus- sion at Monday's meeting, committee members made it clear that the chances of Scugog coming up with the estimated $3.5 million neces- sary for a new indoor pool are remote, at best. "The cost is just overwhelming. We would need to have a major (corporate) sponsor on board," said committee chair Ken Carruthers. However, he noted that many com- munities in southern Ontario operate outdoor swimming pools. Mayor Doug Moffatt agreed, stating the municipality does not need to Carruthers build an "Olympic size" outdoor pool, but one that is of top quality. He sug- gested an "off the shelf" design could be appropriate for the township's needs, calling it a great addition to the recreation facilities here. With proper insulating materials and heaters, the annual use of an outdoor pool can be extended from June through September. Although all members of the com- mittee supported the resolution to ask for prices, there were some words of caution. Ward 4 rep David Dietlein noted the high operating costs for any kind of swimming pool. And he said it would be a "large cap- ital investment for such a short season." Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden wondered if the community has given up completely on the idea of an indoor pool. It was the top priority just six years ago when Scugog conducted an extensive survey to find out what resi- dents want. "We have to make sure we do a good job (measuring) public opinion on this," said Councillor Gadsden. "Does the community still feel the same way?" He suggested another public survey might be appropriate to find out what kind of pool township residents would like now. Committee chair Carruthers said the municipality should be putting aside funds each year towards the cost of a new pool, when and if the council ever gives such a project the green light.
