"Can we limit the number to two companies? | don't think so," said Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden at a meeting last week. He made the comments to Archie Ewing, owner of one of the two companies now operating ir Scugog. Mr. Ewing appeared before council last Monday afternoon to register several complaints about his competition, including alleged use of his company's cab colours (blue and white), and the yellow roof marker. He also alleged a cab has operated in Scugog with- out a meter in direct contravention of the bylaw, and that one of his regular customers was charged more than double for a fare that normally costs about $17. After hearing the allegations from Mr. Ewing, who has operated his company here for the last seven years and now has three cabs in service, council agreed to tell the municipal bylaw enforcement department to look into the issue. Responding to the suggestion that council would have a tough time limiting the number of taxi licences to two, Mr. Ewing replied that two companies now have a tough time surviving in Scugog. If that number were ever increased to five, he said, "all of them would go broke." Mayor Doug Moffatt said the number of cab compa- nies operating in Scugog should be determined by the market. * "It is up to the provider of the service to build up a reputation" that will keep the business, he said. Mayor Moffatt went on to say that this winter a per- son was charged $42 for a cab ride from downtown Port Perry to a rural address west of town. And the driver would not take the customer to the door because the long driveway was snow-covered. The mayor said that customer was his wife, and she angrily refused to pay more than $20. Mr. Ewing replied that if he ever found one of his dri- vers did something like that, "I'd throttle him."
