A FOTN © pi SR -- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 11, 2000 - 13 Plans underway to plant crops for Canadian Foodgrains Bank By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog residents will continue their effort to help the underprivileged around the world when they plant two crops for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank later this year. Sponsored in part by the Utica and Epsom churches, a crop will be planted for the fifth con- secutive year in 2000, and in a much bigger way, says Don Asling, a volunteer with the local group. Corn and soybeans will be planted in a total of 43 acres of land around Epsom this year, thanks to the generosity of two area families. Corn will be planted on Il acres of land donated by Allan Bailey near the intersection of the Marsh Hill Rd. and the Sixth Concession, while soy- beans will be grown on 34 acres of land about a mile north of Epsom near the Eighth Concession and Marsh Hill Rd. That plot of land was offered to the group by a Stouffville man. "We're going to have about 10 more acres this year than in the past," said Mr. Asling. Durham Police were called to Utica shortly after 9 p.m. on April 7 when it was reported that a vehicle was in the ditch. Upon arriving, officers noticed a white vehicle with its rear wheels in the ditch and the front end suspended in the air. The driver, who was stil, sitting behind the wheel, was asked to turn off the engine and exit the vehi- cle. When he did so, officers immediately observed "very noticeable signs of impairment". The man was arrested and taken to the Port Perry station where he failed two breath tests. He was charged with one count of care and control and one count of exceeds the legal blood-alcohol level of 0.08. As.a result, a 53-year- old Markham man will appear in court on 'May 8. rh J Voir nr af MA FELANEED RLF PANIIT IINNIINNY pieces of land." As was the case in pre- vious years, the success of the effort this year will depend on local volun- teers and support. "We get help from everywhere for this pro- ject; from the Epsom and Utica communities to folks from all over including those in Uxbridge, Leaskdale, Greenbank and Manchester. It's those people who help out that make it work," said Mr. Asling. Weather permitting, a work bee is planned for this Saturday (April 15) at the larger field. Volunteers will be asked to pick stones and help clean up the field and prepare it for planting. The corn seed has been provided free of charge by Robert Stone at Pioneer Feeds and soybeans from Alvin Brooks in Mount Albert. On April 21, a Canadian Foodgrains Bank fundrais- ing breakfast has been planned to be held at the Epsom United Church, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Donations will go towards fertilizers and sprays for the two crops. "There is a tremendous need right now for help overseas in places such as Mozambique and Ethiopia where they are suffering from floods, drought and civil war," said Mr. Asling. "We're doing what we can here to help out over there." Crops grown here and across Canada are either shipped out to feed the hungry, or sold so that food provisions can be bought with the proceeds. In the four years that the local effort has been growing crops, food worth approximately $50,000 has been harvested here and sent overseas. Anyone looking for more information on the effort or to volunteer their time is asked to contact Don Asling at 852-6607 or Rass Evans at 852-5411.
