On March 27, they became the Tri-County Tyke League Champs and it was not an easy victory, but they played with skill, speed an# heart. After finishing in first place in the regular season and again in the playoffs the team seemed ready for the finals. They came up against some very stiff com- petition in the form of the Bobcaygeon Cougars. Port Perry stumbled out of the blocks and lost the first game in the six point series at home. Down two points, the Predators came out stronger but despite their effort the game ended in a |-1 tie. The series now stood at three points to one in favour of the Cougars. They returned home for game three and were handed another tough loss. With the Cougars leading the series now five points to one and the next game in Bobcaygeon, things were looking bleak. On March 24 coach Joe Curran rallied his team with an inspiring chalk talk and they put on a con- vincing performance. The final score was 6-4 for Port Perry, and they let everyone know they weren't going to be put out with- out a fight. Zack (Skittles Man) Dickson led the way with an awesome four goals. Jake Taylor also found the mesh with two tremendous shots. Our goalscorers were helped by the strong forecheck- ing of our forwards Jonathan Brouse, Joshua Malyon, Connor Ristow, Gregor Daly, Jessica Joncas, Stephen Hall and Dalton Smith. They never gave up and made life difficult for the Cougar defencemen. Our defence core of Derek Curran, Brent Kirk, Brett Wallace, Mark Boldyke, Tyler Postill and Dakota Watson did a great job of clearing the puck and covering the front of the net. On March 25 game five brought renewed hopes and con- fidence. The Predators did it again. They stayed off elimina- tion and tied the serious at five points each. The final score was 3-1, but the scoreboard wasn't an indication of the calibre of play on the ice. The goalscorers were Derek Curran, Jake Taylor and Zack Dickson. It was the defensive play of the whole team that was the deciding factor. Everyone was checking and using the skills they had been taught to perfection. Back stopping the defence was goalie Courtney Pelow. She stood strong and made the big saves when she JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR The Compton Cable Tykes have ended a sensational hockey season by grabbing the top honors at the Tri-County Tyke League Championships. Both teams were giving their all. When Bobcaygeon scored first, it was time for our players to show they had true champions' hearts. They rallied with three unanswered goals. Excellent forechecking by Jessica Joncas, Stephen Hall, Jonathan Brouse, Joshua Malyon, Connor Ristow and Gregor Daly led to the goals by Zack (one) and Jake (two). Our defence of Dakota Watson, Mark Boldyke, Derek Curran, Brent Kirk, Brett Wallace and Tyler Postill were outstanding. Their heads up play and excellent coverage and checking was essential. It became a battle of goaltenders and Courtney Pelow rose to the challenge. She was able to shake off an early Bobcaygeon goal and made fantastic saves to hold the score in the second and third periods. Congratulations to you all, this is a well deserved win. Thanks goes to Danny Taylor, Brad Brouse, Gord Wallace, Derek Smith and John Langenberg for all their help this season. A special thanks goes to coach Joe Curran for his excellent job this season. He was both a great teacher and example of skill and sportsmanship, winning and losing with class. He made it an excellent and enjoyable season for all.
