RRR EEE 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 11, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Police honour David Dalton for "doing the right thing" Continued from Front Page what was going on and (Mr. Saindon) and | took hold of this guy," said Mr. Dalton. Another citizen, Brad Horsley, ran to the assistance of the two men and after subduing the still struggling suspect, "we pretty much sat on him until the police could arrive," said Mr. Dalton. All three of the men comfort- - ed the frightened victim after police arrived. - It was only during further investigation that police found a knife belonging to the.suspect on the floor of the victim's car. Still later, the trio learned that the man they had captured was a violent repeat offender. Sergeant Andrews said that the suspect had been commit- ting escalating crimes of vio- lence. "They were dealing with a very violent and desperate individual who had committed a similar crime the day before in which the victim was injured and a vehicle was taken," said Sgt. Andrews. "There is little doubt that he (the suspect) would have con- tinued his actions and eventual- ly caused serious harm and Ontario's largest selection of Easter treats using the finest of Belgium Chocolate WITH THE Find up to $100. Mr. Dalton, the married father of two teenagers, said that it was instinct alone that carried him through the actions. "Here's this lady being attacked," Mr. Dalton said. "Well | have a wife and a daughter - - it could have been one of them you know, and well you just have to do something don't you." Sgt. Andrews, recently pro- moted and sent out to work the streets of 26 Division where the man he recommended for the award lives, said that thanks for actions like those of the three men that day in late July cannot be praised enough. "I take my hat off to Mr. Dalton for doing the right thing in coming to the aid of the female victim in this," Sagt. Andrews said. "There is no doubt in my mind that his actions stopped serious injury to the public. | am proud to serve in a community with citi- zens like Mr. Dalton." Dave Dalton was surprised when he was informed recently that his actions would result in a plaque of appreciation from the Durham Police Service. The 'presentation was made by Police Chief Kevin McAlpine and Ajax Mayor Steve Parish while Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt and Regional Councillor looked on at - Ken Gadsden Durham Regional Headquarters in Whitby. Mr. Dalton feels that actions like those of himself, and his two fellow recipients, are becoming more common. "I would encourage anyone to get involved when they see this sort of thing," Mr. Dalton said. "People won't put up with this sort of thing any more." The award comes on the heels of the announcement by 26 Division Inspector Chuck Mercier of a 30 percent drop in break and enters in the Scugog area due, according to Insp. Mercier, to community involve- ment in crime fighting. Mr. Dalton said that while his family was very proud of his actions, his wife took his heroics in stride. "Once she realized | had con- trol of things she went back and finished her shopping," he quipped. Of course Mrs. Dalton probably already knew she was married to a hero.
