Chosen from a record seven entries, The Star has selected Durham Academy Of Gymnastics coach Abbey Morgan as its 2000 Coach Of The Year. Nominated by numerous students and parents and packaged together by Ann Joyner, the nomination package for Abbey Morgan was overwhelming. "Abbey Morgan provides inspirational leadership and a positive role model for the girls in the competitive gymnastics program... she is unfailingly positive about their achievements, sets high expectations and cele- brates the athlete's performance regardless of whether they win or lose," writes Ms Joyner in her package. A seven-year teaching veteran, Abbey directs the competitive program recreational, regional, pre-com- petitive and provincial level teams from the Durham Academy Of Gymnastics on Old Simcoe Rd. Also nominated for the 2000 Coach Of The Year Award were Van Camp Novice coach Stephen Dunn; Novice coach Rob Toguri; Durham Rebels (rep) bas- ketball coach Neil Menear; Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club (Prince Philip Games) coach Charlie Durward; Blackstock figure and precision skating coach Mona Hood; and Novice coach Paul Wise. Congratulations to Abbey Morgan and the coaches nominated for their work. They now lead the series 2-0. 'The series now shifts to Belle River, with Games 3 and 4 this weekend. Port Perry Printing blanks Haugens for NHL title Printers shut down Haugens 3-0 to take the Novice House League A crown thanks to stellar goaltending by Patrick Herold ri On March 27 the Novice House League A finals took place with Haugens facing off against Port Perry Printing. The first period saw the teams feeling each other out with Port Perry Printing"s defense keeping most of the play in Haugen's end. Port Perry Printing poured on the pres- sure in the second period. A pass from Braeden May to Jordan Reville in the first minute started off the scoring. The line of May, Reville and Jacob Rynders scored again four minutes later with a pass from Rynders to Reville who then passed in front of the net to May. Goalie Patrick Herold, with the help of the defencemen, Mitchell Hall, Lane 4 Gibson, Connor Patterson, Mac McCoy and Jeremy Foster, were determined to make this final game a shutout for Port Perry Printing. Halfway through the final period, Hall grabbed the puck in Port Perry Printing's zone and passed to Reville at the blue line. Reville then passed up to May for the final goal of the game. Adding to this great team effort were Colton Jimmo, Greg Jackson, Mat Lee, Tyler Midghall, Carl Suggitt and Michael Foster. Following the game the teams received their trophies and individual medals. For Haugen's the Most Dedicated Player went to Curtis Vander Woerd, Most Sportsmanlike went to Nathan Zochodne and Most Improved went to Brett Foote. For Port Perry Printing the Most Dedicated Player went to Mitchell Hall, Most Sportsmanlike to Colton Jimmo and Most Improved to Mat Lee.
