McClelland Port Perry Star TOP MOJACKS: The Port Perry MoJacks recently held their annual awards night, honouring their top players throughout the 1999-2000 Central Ontario Junior C hockey season. Taking home the awards were, left photo, from left, Adam Jones, Homestead Furniture Award for top team player; Jeff Clarke, Pineridge Sports Award for top defensive player; and Shane Norton, MoJacks' 1999-2000 Most Valuable Player. Also receiving awards died in a car accident several years ago. His parents, Ken and Fran, were at the Port Perry's Shane Norton grabs team MVP award Shane Norton has been named the Port Perry MoJack's Most Valuable Player for the hockey season just completed. The Port Perry native received the coveted trophy at the annual MoJack dinner and awards night held last week. Selection of the MVP is made by the players, coaches and management, and along with goals and assists, recognizes dedication to the team. Although born and raised in Port Perry where he played his minor hockey, this was Norton's first season with the Mojacks, after putting in a couple of "years with the Jr. A Bowmanville Eagles. Now, at age 20, he has another year of Junior eligibility and says he wants to return this fall to the MoJacks. This past year, Norton got off to a bit of a slow start due to a nagging injury that kept him out of the line-up for several games. He really began to hit top form just before Christmas and finished as scoring leader with 54 points (19 goals, 35 assists) in 31 games, one point ahead of linemate Adam Jones. He took a regular shift on the power play (six goals) and also killed penalties. Teamed with Jones and Dale Drummond, the trio formed the MoJacks top produc- tion line this past season and were 1-2-3 in the team scoring. The Rookie of the Year for the Mojacks is another Port Perry native, Ryan McQuade. The winner of the Luke Family trophy finished with 32 points (21 goals and || assists), which was fourth in team scoring. He had two powerplay goals and two short-handed markers to lead'the team in that department. Defenseman Kelvin Coates was winner of the Watts Family trophy as the most improved player over the season. He's a solid "stay-at-home" style defenseman who played in 38 of 40 games. He chipped in with a goal and 11 helpers but his strength was cutting down scoring chances in the MoJack zone. Coates isn't afraid to drop the gloves and led the team in penalty minutes with 108. Jon Werry was named winner of the Vaughan McKee Memorial award for hard work and dedication to the sport. He had six goals and six assists in 34 games, killed penalties and always seemed to be on the ice in critical situations. This was his first campaign with the MoJacks and he's expected back next year. The Dan Sluggett Memorial Award was presented to Derek Tindall. It recog- nizes academic achievement and dedi- cation to the game. No MoJack worked harder game in and game out than Tindall, a native of Port Perry. He collected 14 points (three goals and 11 assists) and despite his hard-hitting style had just 14 minutes in the penalty box. This award remembers Dan Sluggett, a popular MoJack and top student who awards night to make the presentation. The Homestead Furniture trophy for top team player went to Adam Jones. He finished second in scoring with 53 points in 36 games, and his 25 goals was tops on the squad. Jones is another product of the Port Perry Minor system and com- pleted his third season with the MoJacks. Along with a deft scoring touch, he plays a tough, physical style that showed up in his 85 penalty minutes. Team captain Jeff Clarke won the Pineridge Sports award as top defensive player. Clarke was an "over-ager" this past season. He led the blue line corps in scoring with five goals and 18 assists, was an anchor on the point during power plays, and killed penalties. The Port Perry native has one of the hardest shots in the Central Jr. C. League and he was named to the all-star squad in January. His 104 penalty minutes was second highest on the team.
