In addition to this great feat, the group enjoyed some sightseeing the old Maritime City of Halifax. Who says great things can't happen at our local little high school? The band returned home late Sunday night. The annual Talent Auction at the Blackstock United Church was another excellent success with a wide variety of goods and services auctioned off by Arnott Wotten and Harvey Graham to great prices. Much fun was enjoyed as well. There will be a community shower in honour of a couple to be married this summer - namely Jen Byers and Morgan Adams at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, May 5 at the C.E. Room of the United Church. Either miscellaneous gifts or a donation to a larger community gift to Michelle at 986-5215 or Julie at 263-8997 will be great. All are welcome - both men and women to this happy event. For those who missed church on Sunday morning at the United Church, you missed an absolute musical treat when the choir presented the Gospel Cantata which received a standing ova- tion. Congratulations to Linda Kyte and the choir for such a great presentation. All who are involved with either the Blackstock and Nestleton United Churches are reminded of the very impor- tant joint congregational meeting next Sunday evening, May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Blackstock Church to strike the Needs Assessment Committee. Blackstock Square Dancers group, "The Bashful Bows" held the end of the season party on Thursday, April 27 at the Town Hall. The evening began with a pot luck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Then Glen and Carolyn conducted an evening of square dancing, line dancing and games. The evening concluded with coffee and dessert and all wishing each other a won- derful summer and a hope to meet and dance again in the fall. Better health is wished for Nancy Bryans who is not well these days, to Jim Coates who is having a slow recuperation from his earlier surgery and to Denzil Moore who spent some time in hospital. A reminder of the Phonebusters meet- ing in which Det. Sergeant Barry Elliott will deal with fraud and scams - a topic that should be of interest to all. This information meeting is brought to the community through the teaming efforts of the Women's Institute and the Lions Club. No fee required but a donation if you wish and refreshments will be served. Come out for a worthwhile instructive meeting. All this on Wednesday, May 3. For further information call Dora Martyn, reporter of this event. When you go to pick up your mail at the local post office don't be surprised that on Saturday it was moved to the back of the Country Convenience store. It will be a change of habit for a while for most of us, | am sure. On Thursday evening, Blackstock Agricultural Society was represented by District 4 Director, Barry Van Camp, Fred Ford and Joyce Kelly at the annual spring meeting of District 4. Various topics of interest to the many fairs in our area were discussed at the meeting held at Oakwood Community Centre. It was well attended by fair orga- nizers throughout the district. A note of an exciting workshop May 2000 courses "Veni Vidi" at 170 Queen Street, Port Perry, above Brock's. A large variety of art courses will be offered from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. One of the instructors will be Donna Griffen Smith of Blackstock at the summer camp. Pick up a brochure for more information. There were 17 tables at the Tuesday evening euchre party with the following winners - Helen Dorrell, Doris Manns, Irene Hoffman, Charlie Campbell, Velma Johnston and May Shortridge. Reid Harness had the most lone hands. Lucky draw winners were Doris Hill, Roy Werry, Doris Manns, Gary Notenboom, Gord Finnie and Charlie Campbell. Four Season Garden Tour District 17 of the Ontario Horticultural Association is holding a series of four garden tours throughout the summer. The dates are May 13, June 17, July 8 and Sept. 9. This tour covers the entire Durham Region, with gardens open from Beaverton in the north to Oshawa, Ajax and Pickering in the south, with many in between. Gardens are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost of the package, which includes maps and written directions is $20 per person. Tickets are available from local garden club members or by calling Ken Love at 986-0112 or Kathleen Petrie at 986-4771. St. John's Anglican Church News Sunday morning's Eucharist was also a Festival of Easter carols, hymns, anthems and lessons. The choir sang five anthems and led the large congregation in singing eight hymns and a psalm, so this was a very musical service. Readers of this column will, by now, be well aware that Al and Charlotte Rutherford are moving to Nova Scotia and that St. John's has been wishing them well for the past couple of weeks. Well, Sunday was the Rutherfords last day at St. John's (although we know they'll be back for visits). At coffee time after the service, we all sang "Auld Lang Syne," and of course there were lots of hugs and a few tears. Next week they'll be worshipping, believe it nor not, in St. Johns in New Germany, N.S. Next weekend we are painting the lower part of the church hall. Volunteers are still most welcome on Friday, May 5 at 5 p.m. and/or Saturday, May 6 at 9 a.m. B.Y.O.B. (Brush of course).
