The idea of a medieval festival came about after Ms Thomson read an arti- cle on a similar event in the United Kingdom. "It sounded like a really good idea, something that people would enjoy. Our festival is a little watered down compared to the one over there, but there should be something for everyone, for all ages," she said. "Visitors will get a chance to see jugglers, and minstrels and people in period costumes. They can watch them, they can learn from them... it's an interactive art experi- ence." The highlight of the weekend will be the castle building contest, which challenges area youth between the ages of six and 12 to construct their own castles. Castles can be built out of any material, but must not exceed three-feet by two-feet; there is no height restriction. "Toilet paper rolls, con- struction paper, boxes.... it's amazing what the kids can come up with. Once they let their imagination go they can come up with some pretty good ideas." Entrants will be judged for the most authentic cas- tle, and the most unique construction materials. The judges will make their final decision on Saturday afternoon.
