"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 6, 2000 - 13 Steam era returns to Scugog Steamboats on Scugog Festival features "African Queen" cruises Continued from page 1 from both the federal and provincial government, as well as a newsroom personality from the Toronto CTV affiliate, CFTO. In the making for close to eight years, Steamboats on Scugog features 140 pages on the local steamboat era, from approxi- mately 1850 to 1920. Scugog artist Les Parkes was commis- sioned to do the artwork, includ- ing the book's jacket. "It looks into the history of the dozens of steamboats which sailed this lake some time ago," Mr. Arculus said, summarizing his latest work. "It will add to the extensive record of local history being accumulated by local authors, such as (Port Perry Star publish- er) Peter Hvidsten (Out of The Ashes) and myself." Steamboats looks into the early history of Lake Scugog, which was a busy port for marine trav- ellers in the late 1800s. The boats, their crew, and owners make a compelling story for local history buffs, explains Mr. Arculus. "So few people realize that the entire waterfront here was dominated by five major sawmills. Dozens and dozens of steamboats used to bring logs here to the mills," he said. "Many homes south of here, and even into upper New York State, were built by lumber from the Lake Scugog area. The steamboats played a major role in the development of the econ- omy in"this area." After the launch of Steamboats on Friday evening, a special showing of the film "African Queen" will be held at the Latcham Centre to mark the arrival of the steamboat made famous in the classic film. Those interested in viewing the show are urged 'to bring lawn chairs and blankets. On Saturday and Sunday (June 10-11), the public is encouraged to make their way to the lakefront area by Palmer Park to take in the ships and displays, which will include 16 classic and antique boats and steamboats in the water; more than 40 radio- controlled scale-model boats; a display by the antique outboard motor club; and classic boats on trailers in the park. Bd The Caravelle ll, from Fenelon Falls, will be providing cruises on Lake Scugog this weekend, as will the steamboat "African Queen", from the movie of the same name. In the Latcham Centre, a model railroad layout will be set up, and models and photos of steamboats will be available for viewing. On both days of the weekend, a special visit by Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, will arrive at the waterfront via horsedrawn carriage down Queen St. at approximately 1:30 p.m. each day. Hour-long cruises on the African Queen on Lake Scugog will be available through the weekend, and next week as well. As well, special two-hour cruises on the Bobcaygeon- Fenelon Falls steamboat, Caravelle 2, will also be available during the weekend. Cruise times are 10 am., | p.m, and 4 p.m. "The more my research expanded, the more interesting things got. I lucked into catching the African Queen at the right moment, and this whole festival exploded into something that promises to be memorable," said Mr. Arculus, adding he hopes to make the festival an annual occurance. The festival, which is spon- sored by the Scugog Historical Society, recently received fund- ing from the federal government through a millennium grant. Approximately half of $8,500 will be used to cover the cost of the book, while the remainder has been earmarked for the festival. Those wishing to purchase a copy of Steamboats on Scugog, which will sell for $29.95 a copy, can pick them up at The Port Perry Star, Books Galore, and The Settlement House.
