SESE 16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 6, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Claremont Field Centre, local school closed down High coliform levels found in Claremont well water Elevated counts of coliform bacteria were found in well water that serves the Claremont Field Centre, a learning resource centre for school chil- dren operated by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Coliform are bacteria that give an indication of the bacteriological quality of drink- ing water. Following routine testing by Durham Region Health Department, laboratory test results received on June | indi- cated elevated levels of col- iform bactemga. As a result, the Field Centre was immediately contacted and a closure order was issued as a precautionary measure. Students and staff from Adelaide McLaughlin Public School, who arrived at the Field Centre on May 31, were sent home and officials at Durham District School Board were advised of the situation. In a letter issued by the Conservation Authority it was recommended that all students and staff who experience diar- rhea nausea or vomiting should seek medical attention and con- tact the Health Department. "Coliforms are not necessari- ly harmful, but their occurrence in water may indicate the pres- ence of other pathogenic organ- isms," explains Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham Region Associate Medical Office of Health. "While no E coli were identified in the sample as a precaution, we are closely mon- itoring the situation." On June 1, staff of the Field Centre advised the Health Department that they had been manually adding chlorine to the water since May 29, after noticing the pump on the chlo- rination system was not working. From May 24-31, students from a York Region school were in attendance at the Field Centre. York Region schoel board and health department officials have been notified of the situation. Durham Region Health Department is working with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Durham District School Board to resolve the issue. The Field Centre will remain closed until such time.
