"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 6, 2000 - § 32nd annual Canoe The Nonquon Nonquon fundraiser raises S7,000 for Historical Society By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Canoe enthusiasts helped raise more than $7,000 for the Scugog Historicial Society during last week- end's 32nd annual Canoe The Nonquon fundraiser. Almost double the number of entrants participat- ed in the 2000 fundraiser, with 101 canoes and kayaks taking to the waters of the Nonquon River and Lake Scugog last Saturday (June 3) morning. Only 52 canoes were entered in the 1999 event, raising approximately $5,000. Money raised through the event is used to fund the operations at the Scugog Shores Historical Museum. "It was absolutely fantastic," said Bruce Aikins, an organizer with the 2000 Canoe The Nonquon com- mittee. "We just about doubled our number of par- ticipants and our sponsorship was up over last year... after costs, we should be looking at at net of about $7,000." Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt and his partner, Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden, collected the most pledges: $1,200. They graciously turned their prize money back over to the organizers. Taking top spot in the 10 categories were: Men: Port Perry's Bill Hurst and Dean Haugen; Women: Janice Edwards-Kennedy and Lee Warner, both of Port Perry; Cl: Cambridge's Don Stoneman; Mixed Couples: Heather and Rick Rutledge of Holland Landing; Under-14: Phillip Kadowaki of Blackstock; Family: Brampton's Wayne and Laura Gregory; Under 17: Thomson Hawks (Port Perry) and Taylor Churchill (Blackstock); Kayak: Port Perry's Larry Emmerson; C2: Stan Machacek (Scarborough) and Rene Boogemans (Hensil); and 40-plus: Richmond Hill's Marvin Doran and John Hiley. ~ Remember to check out The Port Perry Weekend Star this Friday for complete results from the 2000 Canoe The Nonquon fundraiser. Police officers charged in the death of Sunderland man appear in court By Rik Davie Special to the Star The three officers charged in connection with the 1998 shooting death of a 44-year-old Sunderland area man and the wounding of his son appeared briefly in a Whitby court last Friday asking for an October trial date. Counsel for the two York policemen and one Durham officer charged in the matter set a pretrial date over until July 4, by which time a judge to hear the case will be named and the request for trial to begin Oct. 30 and con- sume some six weeks of court time will be ruled upon. It is expected that a judge from outside the York and Durham courts community will be named to hear the landmark case. The province's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) -- charged with investigating police incidents that result in serious injury or death to civilians -- laid it's first-ever murder charge against York Regional Police officer Const. Randy Martin who is charged with sec- ond-degree murder in the death of Tony Romagnuolo. The shootings occurred on the evening of Dec. 28, 1998 after two York Region constables, accompanied by two Durham Regional officers, traveled to the Romagnuolo's home on the 17th Side Road near Sunderland to investigate allegations that Lorenzo Romagnuolo had threat- ened a police officer in a phone conversation on Dec. 20, 1998. We are very confident that he will be vindicated once a jury of 12 members of this community has an oppor- tunity to hear what really happened."
