"Regular price fficials sample water for ollution By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Ministry of Environment and Durham Region Health Department officials were called to Scugog Island Sunday after the water in a small stream there was reported to be con- taminated. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt told The Star Monday morning that he was informed of the situation around 8:30 a.m. June 11 by a Pine Point Rd. resident who became suspicious of the quality of the water in the stream. Joined by Township CAO Earl Cuddie, Mayor Moffatt went to the stream around 10 a.m. and took water samples. "We went out and took some pictures and some samples of the water," said the mayor. "The water in the stream was black and smelled horribly, what we thought was pig manure." They also checked the stream where it crosses Island Rd., near Prentice Rd. "It was the same there. You couldn't see anything in the water and it smelled horrible," said Mayor Moffatt. Fortunately, the contamination had not travelled far enough down the stream to make it into Lake Scugog, the mayor said. "There's no evidence it had reached the lake; the stream is slow-moving and there is a big swamp there, but with all the rain we've had, it's only a matter of time," he said. Ministry of Environment (MOE) investigator Steve Batten arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. on Sunday, but found nothing too serious, said Mayor Moffatt: "When we checked with the ministry, the guy said that he didn't see anything too bad... that we'd get our samples back in a week or so.
