"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STA R - Tuesday, June 27, 2000 - 1 New bill to increase E-Commerce: O'Toole Durham MPP John O'Toole says legislation introduced by Attorney General Jim Flaherty will help reduce legal barriers to e-commerce. This leg- islation was adapted from the.United Nations model law on e-commerce. "The proposed legisla- tion would bring Ontario laws in line with techno- logical advances," Mr. O'Toole said. "Of course, many businesses and consumers still prefer to do business in person and on paper. But, for those who choose to conduct business electronically, this act would set the rules." Among other things, the Electronic Commerce Act would: o Ensure that electronic contracts, documents and signatures have the same legal effect as contracts, documents and signa- tures on paper. o Set up rules for auto- mated transactions and for correcting mistakes made on a computer. o Adopt national and international standards for e-commerce law. The act would not require anyone to use or accept electronic com- munications and would not prescribe the tech- nology that must be used. It is "minimalist" legisla- tion which gives wide lat- itude to business, gov- ernment and consumers to choose the methods they want to use to com- municate. "The Internet is a rapidly growing market- place. The Electronic Commerce Act is intend- ed to cut red tape and remove outdated legal barriers to e-commerce," said Mr. O'Toole. "By keeping Ontario globally competitive, the pro- posed legislation will spur job creation." The Durham MPP wel- comes any input from con- stituents and businesses in the Durham riding who wish to discuss how the e-business legislation may affect them. The Electronic Commerce Act was first introduced in the Ontario Legislature June 13. CARMA Graduation Graduated June 2000 from Graphic Design at Canadore College, North Bay. Congratulations!
