McClelland Port Perry Star After an absence of a couple of years, one of Port Perry's finest traditions has returned this sum- mer. Competitive mens' fastball is back as the Port Perry/Durham Bulls take to the Lakefront dia- mond on Water St. every Wednesday evening in the Oshawa City and District League. And that should be welcome news for the legions of fastball fans across Scugog Township. After all, Port Perry and Scugog have a tradition in this sport going back decades in which highly competitive teams were as much a part of summer as the backyard barbeque and ice cream in the park. The idea to field the Bulls this year came from former Port Perry resident Brad Bricknell and Jamie Baker, who are part- ners in Team Sports Outlet at ' Fastball' Ritson Rd. and Highway 401 in Oshawa. In a recent interview with The Port Perry Star, Brad said they began kicking the idea around last winter as both were looking for a team to play some fastball with and also for a team which their sports store could sponsor. Brad's brother Corey also liked the idea of putting a team together and before long they were contacting players from this community and across Durham Region to see if there was any interest. As it turned out, there was plenty of interest, and the Bulls boast a roster of players with a wealth of fastball experience at the national and international level. Brad Baker (Jamie's brother) is the ace of a four-man pitching staff that includes Port Perry's Chad Venning, Jamie Baker and s Back:© Brad Bricknell. Brad Baker is an outstanding pitcher and power hitter who has fastball experience at the highest levels and is currently a member of the powerful "87 Classics" of Green Bay, Wisconsin. First sacker Dave Hoffman and outfielder Reno Dembrosio are with the New Jersey Windmills this summer. Brad Bricknell, Jamie Baker and Mike Dingman are with the Pickering Heat of the elite International Softball Congress (I1SC) These players compete for their ISC teams on weekends and are free to play for the Bulls in the mid-week games. But it gives one an indication of the commitment and dedication they bring to the sport. And there's no shortage of local talent on the roster, either. Both Brad and Corey Bricknell are long-time residents of Port Perry, as are brothers Chad and Craig Venning. John Butler is a former XL Eagle, while Todd Smart and Scott MacLennan have played on the same teams since they were six-years-old, winning All- Ontario titles along the way. Todd recently spent time in New Zealand, one of the fastball powers on the globe. Rounding out the roster are Tom Kelly and Steve Baker of Oshawa, also well known in fastball circles. Brad told The Port Perry Star there are long-term hopes for this team. Eventually, perhaps two or three years, if things go well, the Bulls will become part of the ISC. But that would take big-time sponsorship and fund-raising as the budget for an ISC team runs about $40,000 per season. The Bulls will eat up about ne of Port Perry's finest summer-time traditions has returned to Scugog, thanks to the Durham Bulls $5,000 in expenses this year with Team Sports Outlet being the main sponsor. And the players showed their own commitment, chipping in $100 each to help the cause. Brad is currently talk- ing to other potential sponsors, and anyone who would like to be part of it can reach his cell phone at 416-676-1199, or 905- 438-9500 during the day at his store. "We wanted to bring fastball back to this community. There are some very good players on this team and in our league. Fans who come out to the games are going to see some excellent fast- ball," he said. The Bulls, who are striving to continue that rich tradition and heritage which put this commu- nity on the fastball map of Ontario, play their home games at the south lakefront diamond on Water Street on Wednesday nights.
