Ashburn News by Florence Ashton Come celebrate Canada Day at Ashburn Park Rev. Jim McClure conducted morning worship at Burn Church on Sunday and will be with us throughout July. His sermon was titled "God has no hiding place on earth," sermon text being Matthew 22, vs. 21. The Brooklin Horticulture Society will hold their regular meeting and rose show on Wednesday, June 28 at 8 p.m. at Brooklin United Church. John Van Ekeren will address the subject "Pruning shrubs," which should be of vital interest to all members. There are 14 classes in the rose section; 15 in-other flower specimens; eight in the fruits/vegetables section; and three classes in the decorative. This gives you a good variety to choose from as you select your entries. Be sure to check the showbook for further details. Also there will be a silent auction at this meeting. Saturday, July | is the big celebration at Ashburn Park, when we celebrate Canada's 133rd birthday, sponsored by the Ashburn Community Centre Board. Bring your family and come out and enjoy the many activities for all ages, i.e. kids carnival games, kids and adult races, kids 12 and under decorate your bike, skateboard, wagon, prizes for winners. Ashburn Scouts will be selling freezies and pop to offset their cost to their next Jamboree in - P.E.I.,, 2001. Celebrations get underway at 1 | a.m. Church community bids farewell to Rev. Shearman and family Blackstock On Sunday morning at a com- bined service of Nestleton and Blackstock United Churches, Rev. David Shearman conducted his final service as minister of the pastoral charge. It concluded with a service of Closure of the Covenant of Ministry,Following the service a time of fellowship was spent with a time to bid adieu to the Shearman family. The moving van arrived Monday morning as David and Carol and their family leave for their new home in Owen Sound with the community's best wish- es going with them. The strawberry supper on Sunday evening sponsored by the United Church and held at the Rec. Centre was a great suc- -CeSS. Next Sunday morning, the annual Outdoor Service of the Nestleton and Blackstock United Churches will be held at the home of Eileen McLaughlin on Bradburn Road at 10:30 a.m. Dress casually and bring your lawn chairs. If you wish, bring a picnic lunch to share and join others of the congregation for a time of fellowship following the service. Beverages will be pro- vided. The speaker will be Rev. Michael Bishop, Chaplain of Lakeridge, Port Perry. If the weather is not suitable, the ser- vice will be held in the church. Another of the area's esteemed senior citizens, Lome McKee, passed away over the weekend at the age of 91. Visitation was Monday evening with the funeral on Tuesday at Wagg Funeral Chapel in Port Perry. Congratulations to Jeffrey Vernon who graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. His par- ents, Freda and Larry Vernon attended the convocation exer- cises. Jeff is working in Toronto at HH Angus Consultants. Best wishes Jeff. Congratulations also to Stephanie Brown, daughter of Norm and Patsy Brown, who graduated from O'Neil Collegiate. The rainy weather continues to be of great concern to the farmers as they try to do their many jobs of the season through very difficult conditions. I am sure many urban residents are completely unaware of the seri- ousness of the situation as week after week goes by with heavy rainfall. Ten UCW Afternoon Unit members and one guest gath- ered at the lakeside home of Jean Churchill for a lovely pot luck luncheon meeting. The weather was cool, dreary and wet outside but warm, cheery and dry inside. The speaker]ohn Scott, spoke on his hiking trek in Nepal in the Annapurna Range of the Himalayas, showing slides to expand on his theme. His group hiked up 15,000 feet in seven days and took only four days to return. They also visited a jungle camp where many animals were seen and even had an elephant ride. John has trekked in Africa and threw in a few slides taken in these countries as well. His pictures, personality and com- ments were most appreciated and he was thanked accordingly. A very pleasant afternoon. There were 14 tables at the Tuesday evening card party with the following winners: Sarah Brunton, Verna Slute, Grace Bassant, Vernon Asselstine, Reid Harness and Roy Werry. Grace Bassant had the most lone hands. Draws were won by Joan Sutcliffe, Gary Notenboom, Les Johnston, Vivian Kidd, Dorothy Olan and Edna Manns. At the June meeting of the Blackstock Women's Institute there were nine members pre- sent. President Dora Martyn opened the meeting. Reports of the District Annual and the 100th anniversary in Bowmanville were given Memorial donations in memory of Kathleen Watts were given to Port Perry Hospital and the FWIO headquarters. An excellent program on ecology was in charge of Pat Sleep who spoke on the Oak Ridges Moraine which runs through Burketon and so is close to us. Pat gave much information on this subject. The WI will be taking a trip to the Adelaide Hoodless home on July 15. Anyone interested in going contact 986-5378. Otherwise there will be no sum- mer meetings until September. Be watching for our first Wednesday in the month and join us for a varied and interest- ing season of programs. The meeting closed with O'Canada.
