A TT THT NHN ET fT Mr TT 8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 27, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Celebrating 25 years of t By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A Port Perry woman was hon- oured last week with a celebra- tion to mark her 25th year as a music teacher. Teacher Paula Copithorn was honoured for her years of work teaching piano lessons when an recital featuring her students was held at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church in Port Perry last Thursday (June 22). The recital marked the end of her 25th year as a music teacher, a career that began at the age of I 7 right here in Port Perry. "I was a late bloomer; | began playing at 11," said Mrs. Copithorn. From there, however, she began learning in earnest, quick- ly ascending through the levels: "In four years | had gotten to my Grade 8; | was just chomping at the bit to learn. My music teacher would push, and | would push back. I always knew | was going to be a music teacher." At the age of 17, when her own teacher moved away, Mrs. Copithorn -and two other stu- dents took over where their instructor left off, teaching younger students. She studied further before graduating and opening a studio in her own home. "When | graduated | quit my part-time job and began*teach- ing full-time." Mrs. Copithorn recalls teach- ing approximately 55 students each week before her two sons were born, and about 35 each week after that. "I've taught hundreds of stu- dents... thousands maybe," she said. Students here as well as those she instructs in Toronto usually receive a 30-minute les- son each week on the piano and in theory. "It's an occupation I'll never tire of. Piano is a discipline; most people don't like the practice it involves, but they do like the fin- ished product. They all love to play, but unless you practice - put hard work into it - it won't pay off," said Mrs. Copithorn. "The discipline in piano will follow them for the rest of their lives, wherever they go. It will never be time wasted." During the presentation Mrs. Copithorn received certificates from musical conservatories as well as Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Durham MP Alex Shepherd. Her two sons Darryl, 15, and Mark, II, were included in the ceremony. Her husband of 19 years, Garry, was also in atten- dance.
