"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 1, 2000-19 Summer romance in Port Perry Seventh-Star Productions brings Romeo and Juliet to the c stage By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The most well-known of love stories comes to the stage in Port Perry this weekend, when Joel van Veghel's Seventh-Star Productions presents Romeo and Juliet. The play is an ambitious undertak- ing for the 21-year-old Mr. van Veghel, who as producer and director is guid- ing a cast of 30 - most of them aged between 17 and 20 - through one of Shakespeare's most complex and often-interpreted works. "It's a wonderful summer play," said the Greenbank resident, whose pro- duction of Romeo and Juliet plays at Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry this com- ing Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. His company presented A Midsummer Night's Dream two sum- mers ago, and this year, as he was preparing Seventh-Star's 2000 season, Mr. van Veghel included another of Shakespeare's plays in his plans. "I love Shakespeare - | absolutely adore it - and | just thought, Romeo and Juliet," he said. A call for auditions went out early in the year. Of the 40 who read for parts, 30 have been cast. Playing the parts of the two teenaged lovers are... two teens. Justin Carroll, 17, who lives in Uxbridge and attends Port Perry High School, has been cast as Romeo, his first part in a stage production. Juliet is | 7-year-old Alicia Moore, also an Uxbridge resident. Romeo and Juliet has been staged countless time, and has been present- ed in numerous film interpretations, the most recent a mild success, set in modem times and starring teen heart throb Leonardo Di Caprio. Mr. van Veghel has chosen to set his produc- tion in the times during which Shakespeare wrote it. "I really like to see Shakespeare i traditional as possible," he said. want the audience exposed to what h was like in the 1500s." A graduate of Port Perry High Romeo and Juliet will be on stage in Port Perry later this week at Town Hall 1873. Included in the cast are Uxbridge's Alicia Moore as Juliet (foreground), Joani Croft as Friar Laurence and Don Coverley, as a member of the Capulet family. School, Mr. van Veghel entered the amateur theatre world with a produc- tion of Saltwater Moon that was well- received. He followed that effort with increasingly more challenging produc- tions, which have included Grease, Arsenic and Old Lace, and the hugely popular Fawlty Towers series, which played to full houses in Uxbridge last year and will continue this year. The Fawlty Towers productions were fundraisers for various communi- ty causes. Proceeds from the other shows are reinvested in the new pro- ductions. Mr. van Veghel funded Saltwater Moon himself. Mr. van Veghel continues to do well enough with each production that there's a fund in place to get the next one going. "Even if it's $20 you make, it goes into the next show," he said. "And you can really stretch that $20." Romeo and Juliet opens Thursday night at Town Hall 1873, and continues through Saturday night.
