Ve, There was, as might be expected, some criticism of the announcement that the Scugog Chamber of Commerce was moving Festival Days from downtown Port Perry to the fair- grounds this year. Indeed, this paper weighed in with the opinion that the move changed the character of Festival Days, making it less a festival than an early preview of the annual fall fair. And there were similarities between this past weekend's event, and the show put on each Labour Day by the fair board. There was a much expanded - and improved - midway with various rides and games. There were vendors hawking everything for psychic readings to T-shirts to tattoos. There were performances by local folks, and large- No A) scale concerts featuring the likes of Canadian rock icon Kim LN (3) Mitchell. : 4 a Z-D \ From an entertainment perspective, the experiment is an ; E! ¥) A improvement. It's no longer the Festival Days we used to \ NS know, to be sure. But wasn't the primary ongoing criticism of Festival Days in its former incarnation that it was too stale and predictable? One thing is for sure: The Chamber members who took part in staging the event had a sincere desire to put on a great show, and they worked like hell to make it happen. It's easy to criticize from the sidelines. It is quite another thing to get off one's rear, and invest time and effort in putting an ambitious event together, and then hoping the public will attend, and enjoy. Let's give the new-look Festival Days a chance. Maybe in : future the event can expand beyond the fairgrounds, and incorporate some of the downtown once more. There are virtually boundless possibilities. N77 770 LUA ) | IZ EERE ROSY I'M SORRY MR. Dr. Graham began his career in Port Perry in 1884 with an office run out of the small barn at the rear of the house. He retired and sold his practice in February 1901, then in April 1903 he resumed his actice on Queen St. until 1910, when he retired once again and moved from town. 3 ® AR eT ---- com-------- cone } Sw fo i -- a ERA Coalition" hosted a public infor- mation session on Paper Sludge in Clarington, Oshawa and adja- cent Scugog on the Oak Ridges Moraine on June 27 at Enfield Church. The little country church was packed with well over 200 people. Upon invitation, city and town councillors were in attendance. Everyone was in agreement that more detailed reliable testing is needed. The Ministry of the Environment states that because a product called "sound sorb" is being manufactured "the Ministry does not regulate the operation nor placement of this material as a waste." Who is doing the testing and the monitoring? Is this reassuring? MPP John O'Toole seemed to confuse the issue with land appli- with his lack of concern for our water supply. Our issue is the massive piles of paper sludge that are being "stored" on Harmony Road north of Raglan Road (the former 9th concession), and in "the pit" on the north side of the 10th conces- sion in Clarington (about 2 km east of Townline Road). It is also being used, covered with sand at the gun club (near Harmony Rd ) as berms. If you haven't seen these piles take a drive. We want credible answers. We want to know that this waste sludge will not affect the ground water or air quality. We want the province to investigate. They should not deregulate paper sludge in our beautiful province.
