Ah "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 18, 2000 - 1 A gift from the heart Boy's pup has changed the life of a deaf woman in Quebec By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star When 13-year-old Kyle Manchee donated a pup from his dog's litter to The Lions Foundation of Canada two years ago, he had no idea his kind ges- ture would greatly improve the quality of life for another person. Two years ago, Kyle saw a docu- mentary on television about how the Lions Foundation was appealing for pups for special training. The Lions Foundation sponsors Canine Vision, Special Skills and Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada. "After seeing the program, | decid- ed to donate one of Ali's pups. | have so much and if I could help someone have a better quality of life, then | was all for it", Kyle said. The pup is now an adult dog named Pockets. After passing her graduation on June 15 this year, Pockets was matched up with Dyane Charlebois, a deaf woman from Quebec. Kyle and his family were invited to a celebration in Oakville last month at which they got to meet Ms Charlebois and were reunited with Pockets, now a fully- trained and certified hearing ear dog. Pockets' new owner was over- whelmed with Kyle's generosity. Pockets warms her new master when the phone or doorbell rings, when the dryer or washing machines shut off, and even when the microwave beeps. Pockets now lives with Ms Charlebois and her family. And since the graduation Kyle has received two letters detailing her progress. "I will always be very thankful and remember you for how happy you have made me. What a great dog. We love her. Kyle, you have made one of my fondest dreams come true, and | thank you from the bottom of my heart," Ms Charlebois wrote. "I'm glad she's happy with Pockets and now has more joy and freedom in her life," said Kyle. Kyle Manchee with his dog, above, and at right, with Dyane Charlebois and puppy Pockets. He donated the dog to be trained to assist the deaf. Puppies received into the dog guide programs come by way of dona- tions from reputable breeders and individuals, and the Lions Foundation has its own breeding kennels. The three most popular breeds used in training programs are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles. A puppy's training begins when it is 8 12 weeks old. It's placed with a foster family that will raise the pup, teach it proper house manners and basic obe- dience. These people help establish the dog's personality and attitude, and increase or decrease its chances of becoming a good guide dog. After a year of being fostered out, the young dog is recalled to the train- ing centre in Oakville for an assess- ment of which program it will be best suited for. "Pockets met the criteria for a hear- ing ear dog," said Kyle. "Of all the dogs that get into the facility for train- ing, only one-quarter of them pass the | a wigI¥iay DENTAL OFFICE 5 Lionel McTague Dr. Sandro Del Rosso GENERAL DENTISTRY FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN Dr. Robert Boyko ORTHODONTIST Dr. Nancy PERIODONTIST ® INSURANCE ASSIGNMENT ACCEPTED WE COLLECT FROM INSURANCE COMPANIES ® PAYMENT PLANS ARRANGED ® SENIOR CITIZENS DISCOUNT m= NEW PATIENTS WELCOME 985-8459 Baldan ® EVENING APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE ® DENTISTRY WHILE YOU SLEEP ® GENERAL ANAESTHESIA AVAILABLE Sydney Or 462 PAXTON ST. Knowing that Pockets is bringing so much joy to the woman's life, Kyle is now busy saving money for a new ven- ture. "When | get enough money saved | am going to buy a Golden Retriever. Then | will donate her pups to The Lions Foundation," he said. "| have so much, and if I can help someone else have a better quality of life, then | am all for it."
