The changes, which began last Monday (July 10), will see the old flight ball system replaced with electric variable speed pumps. "Under the old system, the wells would fill up and the floating balls trig- gered the pumps when they reached a certain height. When the levels went down, the pumps stopped," said Mr. Wells. "Now, with the new upgrade,-the sewage will continuously be pumped out, depending on the amount. If the volume of sewage increases, the pumps will speed up. If it goes down, the pumps will slow down. "Really, it's just a lot more efficient." Work began on July 10, when crews shut down the plant's operating sys- tems, and used diesel generators to continue region crews 3 ® " £ Ag od ay «NEN | A ~ « & : * r 1 b - . : Workers were at the municipal sewage station on Water St. in Port Perry throughout last week, carrying out upgrades designed to make the system more efficient. "We want to have it up and running today," Mr. Wells said Friday. "They're basically fin- ished; we've been run- ning these diesel genera- tors for more than 24 hours now, and | can only imagine the inconve- nience for the people who live around here." Beginning yesterday, the works department was expected to begin its l4-day commissioning test. "Everything has to run smoothly for two weeks before we give it the okay," said Mr. Wells. The new pump system is expected to easily han- die the 3,200 cubic metres of waste that flows daily through Port Perry's municipal sewage sta- tion, he added. Story or photo idea?
