ELECTRICAL Redmen hang on to beat the Lakers The Brooklin Redmen hosted their long-time rivals, the Peterborough Lakers recently in the first of two games between these teams in the next week. Peterborough came in with a record of 6-3 while the Redmen were alone in first place in the Major Series with an 8-3 record on the season. With Peteroborough having two games in hand this series of games will be important to the outcome of the final standings. The Redmen got on the board first when Marty O'Brien scored his first of two on the night with just one minute gone. The Lakers countered two minutes later and then the visitors went on a run and were up 5-2 before the home team scored again. The teams traded goals and the Lakers were up 6-5 going into the first intermission. The second frame belonged to the Redmen. They outscored the Lakers 8-3 to take a solid 13-9 lead into the final frame. The second period was the quietest on the night in terms of penalties, Brooklin goalie Rob Blasdell was assessed a five minute major for slashing while Shawn Parnell for the Lakers got two for tripping. The Redmen scored with 14 seconds left in the second and scored again one minute into the third. This seemed to put the Lakers in a tough spot but the third period saw a spirited effort by the visitors as they outscored the Redmen 5-3. However, on this night that was not enough as the Redmen held on fora 16-14 victory. The win gives the Redmen a record of 9-3 and drops the Lakers to 6-4. Referees on the night, McGrath and Moxam, gave out 127 minutes in penalties to the two teams, the Redmen were assessed 72 while the Lakers were stung with 55. In the first period there were a pair of fights with MacDonnell for Brooklin facing off against Parnell of Peterborough, no sooner had the referees dealt with that before Clark for the Redmen and McCready for the Lakers were involved in their own battle. The Redmen travelled to Brampton on Saturday, July 8 for a 7 p.m. contest against the Excelsiors. The Redmen and the Lakers will do battle again on Wednesday.
