"We need to let the minister know that it's not just our association that is pushing for some answers regarding water damage," said Bill McCutcheon, the president of the OFVGA. "We need our growers, our associ- ate members, and other sectors of agricul- ture to let Mr. Hardeman know their con- cerns, our concerns really - are also his concerns." Excessive water and flooding has caused extensive damage across the province - yet it has been spotty, with some farmers actu- ally benefitting from the over-abundance of rain. However, that is not the case for everyone. "More than 100,000 acres of insurable farmland is laying bare because the fields were too wet to get on to - and that figure could just as well double when you add in uninsured crops. The minister should be looking at this as a province-wide disaster and act accordingly," said Mr. McCutcheon. Michael Mazur, executive secretary of the OFVGA, has begun to compile an inven- tory of water-related claims and damages 4 Farmers urged to write water issues that have affected horticultural growers over the past two months, but he indicated that more information is needed. "We would like to be able to approach the minister with a working plan based on the information we've gathered from our members and individual growers," he said. "But we need their help. With the dam- age as wide-spread as it is, we could almost be looking at a similar situation as to what farmers faced in the west last year. "l hope the minister doesn't use the crop insurance argument. We've been down that road so many times since crop insurance, for many fresh fruit and vegetable producers, just doesn't work." The OFVGA board of directors is advising, all producers who have been impacted by the excessive water to contact the associa- tion office and forward a letter to their local MPP and Mr. Hardeman. "By working together, we can begin to develop short and long-term plans that would alleviate some of the financial con- cerns that farmers are facing because of the severe weather conditions," added Mr. McCutcheon. "Disaster relief is one thing, but that doesn't come into account until taxes are done the following year. Farmers need relief now.
