"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 1, 2000 - 17 70 signed up so far for marathon By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The first-ever Port Perry Half-Marathon is continuing to gamer public interest, says event organizer Angela Connolly. An information session held last week in advance of the Sept. 30 event attract- ed close to 35 people, with 30 of those signing up for the run. About 70 people have already registered, said Ms Connolly. "There's a lot of interest in the marathon," Ms Connolly said after last Monday night's meeting. "We had a wide range of people showing up, from people who'll walk it in three hours to really elite runners. There were experts there and real, real begin- ners." Scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. on Sept. 30, the event 'will see participants travel a 21.1 kilometre (13.1 mile) route. Participants will begin the course at the Port Perry fairgrounds and make their way north of town to Scugog Line 12 before returning back to the Reach Rd. area. Slight changes have been made to the route, with entrants now wrapping up their journey with a half- lap around the fairgrounds track. The entire task will see them leave the fairgrounds via Bigelow St. From there, they will travel along Bay St. out to Old Simcoe Rd. where they'll make their way to Scugog Line 12. There, they'll turn west on Line 12 and will travel to Spadina Rd. and further on to Cragg Rd. before turning onto Scugog Line 10 and then southbound to the fair- grounds on Old Simcoe Rd. again. Water stations will be located en route every three kilometres, and volunteers on bicycles will be on hand to keep an eye on the con- dition of all participants. There are two large hills on the route, said Ms Connolly. The first is about nine kilometres into the run on Scugog Line 12; the COUNTY OF VICTORIA SANITARY LANDFILL SITES CIVIC HOLIDAY HOURS MONDAY, AUG. 7th, 2000 LANDFILL HOURS Carden 12 pm - 5 pm Eldon 1 pm -8 pm Fenelon 9am -5 pm L.D.L. 12 pm - 8 pm Lindsay/Ops CLOSED Mariposa South 9 am -5 pm Somerville 11 am - 6 pm Questions regarding landfill hours and tipping fees call 324-9450, ext. 271. People run in the towns and cities and urban areas and they take the beauty out there for granted," said Ms Connolly. "This is such a beautiful and peaceful route. There has been lots of interest from the area running groups." The idea for the Port Perry Half-Marathon evolved out of discussions among members of the run- ning group Making Strides, says Ms Connolly. "We meet every Saturday morning around 7 a.m. at the Prince Albert Church to go running, and we've been getting new people out every week," she says. "There's a group of us who like to participate in the half-marathon in Toronto and we thought we didn't want to go this year because it wasn't pretty and other things like that.... next thing we knew we were planning our own half- marathon for here. The more we talked about it and planned for it, the more interested and excited we became." A $25 entry fee will be charged to each participant, with proceeds going to the local Big Brothers-Big Sisters chapter. Anyone interested in taking part in Port Perry's first half-marathon can pick up an entry form at Shoppers Drug Mart, call Angela Connolly at 985-1352 or check out her website at www. attcanada.net/~con- nolly.
